Ive been noticing for the last year or so that I get a pretty abrupt jerk just as I start to hit the throttle. It feels like a pretty abrupt snatch, like there is backlash in the trans or something. Seems to be worse when the trans is cold. Happens alot as im leaving work and driving through the 10mph speed limit parking lot with lots of starting and stopping. It make the truck really difficult to take off smoothly without your passenger's head flying back into the headrest sometimes. I did some searching and found some mention of backlash on manual transmission trucks but since this seems to be temp dependent I wonder if this is something different altogether. I do have the OTT tune with mild throttle settings which may not help.

Could my trans fluid be low or need changing (drain + fill method)? I bought the truck used with 100K, now has 120K, so unsure of trans service history.

If you want to rule out the tune have your tuner flash you back to stock and see if the problem goes away.

so you drove the truck no fucks given for 20k miles ? Did the problem happen just now?
I wouldn’t start with any sort of modification. You should figure out service history or do servicing first before anything else.

sounds like a torque converter issue to me… possibly due to old fluid.

Carefully check the u-joints and the slip joint of the drive shaft.

The tune makes it more noticeable, but the electronic pedal on these are pretty crappy. Id love to see someone make a pedal that is tuneable or the ability to soften the curve on the first 10% of the pedal movement. Also the spring is too tight to overcome initially.

Mine sometimes feels like a monster truck trying to drive slow over speed bumps. A lot of head jerking.

Exactly! It's almost like the first 10% of the throttle is extra touchy. The fact that it seems worse when cold makes me wonder if there is something else at play. Ive just really started noticing it this winter... this is my first winter with the OTT tune....

Are you sure it hasn’t been LS-swapped? This is most definitely a first. No passenger has ever had their head fly back into the headrest while riding in a Toyota pickup.

A lot of tunes do exactly what you describe, and it's an easy fix. Talk to your tuner and ask them to tone it down from a dead stop.

Throttle performance should always be smooth and linear, no matter if you have mild or aggressive pedal response settings in your tune. No codes in the PCM huh? You have bad VVT/ OCV solenoids.

Is it an easy fix? Or a compromise? From my experience, more like talk to your tuner, make plans to meet him in a month 200 miles from my house at an inconvenient time, if it actually happens at all.

On my truck at least, I love the throttle response and control throughout, but that initial resistance of the spring on that dang accelerator makes it a pain to cruise at 15 mph with the truck unloaded.

Might as well use a slot car controller...

It's a stupid easy fix to apply to the tune and can be done without affecting throttle everywhere else. I've made the change to my tune and customers of mine as well. I'm not sure who your tuner is, as I do not associate with them, but I imagine they know what to do to fix your issue.
