Will a cap from a 2005 double cab fit on a 2002 double cab bed? Anyone try it? I've found pics of the gen 1 toppers on a gen 2 truck but not the other way, which leads me to believe it doesn't work. I know the gen2 bed is wider but I could live with a bit of overhang if it will mount and seal. Just trying to increase chances of finding a used cap for my 2002.

No. will not fit. gen 2 bed is longer and wider. Also a totally different shape near the tail gate. I had this same issue while looking for one for mine. I just kept searching craigslist and FB marketplace until one showed up near me. took almost a year of searching.

Thanks, I thought that might be the case after looking at the difference in dimensions but was hoping the mismatch wouldn't be excessive. I'll concentrate on gen 1 in that case.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Just depends how bad you need a cap and how soon.

Then just how much work you can do yourself. I will take function over looks myself.

Paying someone what not be cheap and defeat the purpose.

I've got tools and can make stuff fit. I've worked with fiberglass in the past. If the right one shows up for the right price, chopping/sectioning to make it fit is doable and I don't require show quality aesthetics. Knowing how far I'd have to go beforehand will be important so I get the right price. From what i can tell, the Gen 2 is a little bigger overall. It's generally easier to shrink something like this than to make it bigger so I'll keep an open mind.
I ran across a nice one for a 2005, but turns out it fits a Tundra not Tacoma, so that's out.
