I'm doing a variation of this soon. Will bend some 1/8" aluminum bar around my kydex holster then mount to the panel. I'll clip the holster to the bar while driving. Easy access and still in the holster.

Also have a console safe fwiw. Magnet is stuck to the back wall of the safe so the firearm does not roll around in the safe and is not too awkward to grab.

Find a proper holster, learn to carry the right gun for your frame, and you should be able to wear it while driving no problem. I can drive all day carrying appendix with a 19 and spare mag without any problem. In any sort of situation in which a response to a threat is necessary you don't want to have to worry about grabbing a gun, possibly responding with suppressive fire all while trying to break contact and get to cover (vehicles are horrible cover if not utilized effectively). If the weapon is on your person then your response is more natural since you train from the holster most of the time and you can break contact quicker without fumbling to retrieve your weapon.

The proper location for the magnet is in the safe. The proper location for the pistol is also the safe or in a holster securely attached to something.
If you’re going to use a magnet you may as well just have it floating around the cab like the lcp guy. Just set it between the parking brake and center console or in the pocket of the passengers seat.

@boi951 I really like that idea! Do you happen to have a link to that specific seat pocket?

I don't recall anyone saying anything in reference to the fear of guns. Why not ask your local law enforcement, stop one on the street or pop into your local precinct, and get their opinion on this matter. I carried a side to and from NYC for 20 years and it was on my belt in its prescribed holster. If my recollection serves me , if the gun isn't holstered or secured, you could loose your permit to carry said firearm. But Im old and don't know much. Good luck packing heat.

This is what I bought and love it, good quality, leather and cheap. You get 2 but there's not enough room on the drivers side to clear the emergency brake comfortably so just use one on the passenger side and keep the other as a spare because they are identical. There are many on Amazon you can search/choose from.

Thanks @boi951 does it get in the way when a passenger tries to buckle their seatbelt?

No interference with seat belt. It just slips in between the seat and center console and you can easily move it forward or back.

I hear that as it will only work with small EDC pistols.....but those pockets are also nice to put anything else you want in.

My other travel companion (needed while driving in Houston war zones) is a full size government 1911 45. Usually just throw it on the passenger seat and cover it with a hand towel.

they say carry what you shoot well. I have large hands and do not shoot compact, or sub-compact guns well at all. the USP is my daily carry, and it goes in a IWB Crossbreed holster, wherever I go, that isnt work. even in the tacoma, I can draw safely and quickly with the seat belt on from the hip position of the holster. I would love a side console type holster but, cant bring myself to drill holes in the center console. Ski

    DO NOT DO THIS.

    Know your laws, educate yourself.

Cops are not lawyers and their opinions on such matters do not matter. To anyone.

iirc in my county for CCW, there are certain criteria for off-body carry. If off-body the firearm still needs to be concealed and not visible, even in a vehicle.

@MJR, as previously stated, it is a bad idea to use the magnet inside the cab. It is intended to be mounted inside the safe to hold a pistol on the side.
My suggestion would be to get a holster with some sort of retention (snap/strap) and use that inside the cab. Then, use the magnet either in the safe or in your home.
On a truck forum you will get people who piss their pants at the simple thought of someone, somewhere in the world, having a gun. Find a gun forum to join. You will find them more welcoming to the idea of off body carry in a vehicle and they will be more than likely able to direct you to the statutes for your area that pertain to it.
I do carry off body in my vehicle as I am able to reach my CC more easily and drive more comfortably that way. For me, it is tucked between my seat and console. If I need it concealed to talk to someone in the window, I just shift my leg to cover it.

The problem with a magnet is you will have a loaded firearm with an exposed trigger. Also when you remove the firearm you do not have a holster for it. I use a plastic/kydex snap in type of holster with a metal double claw belt clip. I can remove the pistol in the holster from my side and place it in the glove box. Then I place the pistol in the holster on my belt when I get out of the truck. The pistol never leaves the holster. Because of the metal belt clip I can quickly put on or remove the holstered pistol without undoing my belt. Very simple and quick. I retrofitted all of my kydex holsters with the Stainless Steel Waist Clip K Sheath Clips. https://www.ebay.com/itm/203947066384?var=504400529038
