You state that you are “miserable”. Sounds like more than just a mild case of dry skin. I suggest you see a dermatologist. It could be something more than just dry skin.
    See a physician if you
Don't improve despite your best efforts
    Notice redness
Have dryness and itching that interfere with sleep
    Get open sores from scratching
Develop large areas of scaling or peeling skin.

In the mean time take shorter showers. 5 minutes max. Use warm not hot water for your showers. Wash with a mild fragrance free soap. Try a different soap than you usually use. Gently towel dry, don’t vigorously towel off. Immediately after drying slather on moisturizer. The key is to apply moisturizer immediately after drying off as it will trap residual moisture. Use a cream or ointment not a lotion and be sure it is fragrance free. Use all products (soap and moisturizer) that actually say fragrance free. You want it to say fragrance free not unscented.
Drinking lots of water (at least 2 liters a day) may help dry skin but there is insufficient research showing extra hydration has real effect on your epidermis hydration.
If after a week of trying all the above you don’t see significant relief then see a doctor.

Thanks Sprig I now have a suspicion that this is due to the use of a heating pad. It was an old one we had around the house forever. I got to thinking that the itch reminded me of the feeling I had after using one last winter. I looked it up and found this…
    Toasted Skin Syndrome
Toasted Skin Syndrome is a skin condition otherwise known as Erythema Ab Igne. It is thought to be due to the chronic and repetitive application of low levels of heat to the skin.
My skin in the winter gets itchy but lately it’s more annoying than ever. Over Christmas break I have been putting on Coca Nut oil and my skin according to wife is better. However spots on back are still just as itchy so moisturizing didn’t take care of problem completely. Wife noticed some odd spots and I think they might be something Dermatologist needs to see. Judging by how many places are that itchy I may have a lot of spots Doctor needs to see.

Warning don’t use a heating pad a warm shower is much safer for you if you have a backache.

    Thanks everyone Tacoma’s rule!

Good hydration helps, work on drinking a gallon of water a day.

Isn't that stuff basically petroleum jelly with some menthol scent added to it?

Yeah, not sure about the menthol but it’s medicated, originally intended for cows udders, hence the name.
    Edit:
    INGREDIENTS

Petrolatum, lanolin, paraffin wax, water, and 8-Hydroxyquinoline Sulfate (0.3%)

I can relate, have a wood stove and skin issues. I use Cerave, obviously reading through this everyone's got their favorite go to. On a medical level, i have eczema and Cerave is really hard to beat and the only lotion or cream that has helped, Dr recommended. I recommend it to everyone and have yet to have someone say it doesnt work. If that doesnt work, time to see a doctor.

The cerave isnt greasy but keeps your skin hydrated all day. Been using it daily for probably 10 years. i mostly use the daily lotion, but keep a tub of cream on hand if you need an extra kick. Expensive, but manageable if you keep an eye out for deals on Amazon or your local bulk warehouse my have it.
