look at how low that pipe is just behind your rear tire- if you go down a steep curb or down a steep ledge, or back into a tall curb, it’ll get pushed up into the fender body. Cutting off that last bend will prevent that.

I don’t wheel that hard, although I’ve dinged up and scraped my three steel armor plates. I went down a ledge on the right side once and rubbed off my rear bumper cap. That would’ve messed up my fender had I not bobbed the tail pipe.

Has that happened to you? It hasn’t happened to me. I’ve definitely busted the crap out of my rear bumper doing that, but my exhaust is fine. If I end up destroying my bedsides dropping off a ledge, I will consider a high clearance bumper. Bobbing The exhaust will be an after thought.

I added to my post above how and when it actually happened….

Very fair point. Yet it seems reasonable to me to tackle this project at the current state of my truck. Plus one could conceive that it wouldn’t be unlikely to hit any part of the exhaust so, onward I continue with this project.

I saw a guy driving a T100 once (remember those?) with a very pinched tailpipe end that was sagging down a lot, it obviously was damaged going over a curb or something and also busted the hanger.

I’m not OP but here is mine. I wrapped mine with DEI titanium wrap and not pictured but put gold reflective tape on the control box.

Which allowed me to add flat skids along the entire thing.

Did it a week ago. $8 hacksaw and $5 for a better blade… +15-20 min of sawing since I don’t have a sawzall.

I haven't even thought about shortening the exhaust tip.

Yeah but I get tired of the truck screaming every time I simply go to keep up with traffic.

Thats why I recommended the Overland. Look into it, it's rad. No restrictions and no drone and selectable amount of noise with a proper outlet after the rear axle.

Member DVexile has a well thought out very nice crossover with pics in his thread.

I have a 2015 DCLB. Crossover was the first stupid thing I noticed. I took it down the first leg of the Rubicon (the easiest part, level 2) on stock suspension, and the crossover pipe is the only place I rubbed a rock apparently. Still on the list, but very high now.

Edit: 2 years late to the party FTMFW.

I second you on that I was doing a trail off the Shafer switchbacks in moab and rubbed on mine is why I'm wanting to get a y pipe done on my DCLB

my original Y pipe is still there, in the same location as stock in case I wanted to do a bolt on muffler/“catback”

I just had them reroute the tubing on the driver side to get it up next to the crossmember (dunno if that makes sense lol)

your best bet is to get your skids before hand and bring it with you so they can mock it up and make sure it clears. The first time they did it, it ended up being too close for comfort to the plastic 4x4 actuator housing for me so I had them reroute the tubing-do it and brought my skid just to be sure it was going to be exactly how I wanted it.

    Exactly.

Why waste money removing your stock exhaust, when you can get years out of it. Beat the sh!t outta it before you replace it.

Stock with a camper shell for now.
I actually just had this done this past Friday and the guy that installed the exhaust routed it about 2 inches under the transfer case box, so now I’m concerned about it being to hot right there but he is dead certain that it won’t be an issue and that there is more heat being generated from the transmission and other moving parts around it then the exhaust.

Nice, I'm having my done by a local offroad exhaust shop close to my house, he's gonna install new y pipes and tuck it up just behind the frame brace in front of the transfer case. Looking forward to getting it done so I can get my skid plates installed and have that knocked out.
