Because I can sell it for a premium to someone like the OP after 17 years of abuse that would have put most other mid sized trucks that were available at the time I bought the Tacoma into a salvage yard.

Every vehicle sold today is a compromise of numerous things. Toyotas are engineered very well to keep rolling you down the road, but the tradeoff is that they did go thin/cheap on certain areas compared to domestic light trucks. This is called "meeting a price point" and every manufacturer does it differently.

No love for Hubba Bubba? Shame on you!!

This is true. GM did it with the engine in my old Colorado and felt it normal to have a major failure at 4.5 years and 70K.

    Fiat stands for

    Fix
    It
    Again

Yeah, Tacoma just can't beat Jeep's off-road capability.

They are also very slow on freeways, because hood vibrating above 80 mph.

These 2nd gen tacomas do have some problems that we all compensate for (if we use our truck as a truck)

Shitty factory suspension on the early 2nd gens (most of us dont care, because we want to customize anyway)
the tailgate cant handle much weight because it is built very light weight (i ripped mine off and made a solid steel one)
The frame does not have a good rust preventative coating (get some cans of fluid film and soak the whole frame once a year)
the 05-06 had a potential head gasket leak (this can be a big deal)

i'm sure others can chime in with some minor gripes, but generally, the Tacoma is a very long lasting truck (with normal maintanence)
How many 10+ year old Tacos do you see everywhere? I see 20 year old Tacos all the time.
