Traded a 2019 short bed sport in on a 2022 long bed sport. The 2022 is loaded with leather, sunroof, upgraded JBL audio etc.
The 2022 rides and shifts MUCH better than the 2019 did. Even the wife noticed the difference right away.
Other than that love both the trucks.

Ha! Was tickled with your comment that "at your age it will likely outlast you." I was talking to my Dad about my "next" Tacoma (after the 2021), and he made the comment that the 2021 might actually be the last vehicle I will need to buy ;)

I have a 2022 TRD OR with about 1,000 more miles than you. I have been looking for the gear shifting issues people bring up on TW but have yet to notice anything significant with my truck. I have attributed that to me being a pretty laid back driver who tends to budget more-than-enough time to get places, but maybe Toyota changed something about the tuning during the 3rd Gen run.

I had a 2018 OR DCLB for three years, my only complaint was the transmission hunted gears for the first several thousand miles, and held on to lower gears far too long after topping a hill. I now have a 2022 OR DCLB with 9,800 miles on it and the transmission shifting is just fine. Zero complaints about anything.

Yes there have been numerous TSBs regarding trans tuning. His truck used to shift back and forth between 4-6th gears on the same hill. His current OV tune is better than my truck, but to me mine is good enough and I don't like playing warranty games so it will be staying stock.

You must live in Kansas or equally flat state. Lol.
Bring it to Denver, you'll find the talked about issue in less than an afternoon. Lol

Agree fully. It’s horrible on hills, let alone mountains. I couldn’t live without a regear and OVTune. Even then it is pretty annoying.

As someone currently waiting on a new 2023 order to be built, I do have reservations about it knowing the 4th gen is right around the corner. If I had more information on the 4th gen, I might be willing to wait but I highly doubt it will have the same v6 as the tundra. Highly likely it'll be a turbo 4-cyl which I'm not interested in. There are a couple things I find annoying about Toyota's incredible slowness to update (mainly the infotainment system) but to me the reliability is king. I absolutely hate buying cars and want to do it as infrequently as possible so I'm willing to take the 3rd gen over waiting for a 4th and turning out to not like it.

The jury is still out on whether 3rd gen Tacomas should be considered reliable.

Prob. keep it for long time.
My other Toyota truck has 32 yrs with me.

I’ve had 1000lbs in the bed going to the scrap yard, picked up 800lbs of traffic cones, and pulled a fully loaded 6x12 uhaul across the country with it and it handled it fine. I work construction and drive on a rocky road/dirt roads regularly and this truck has no issues. Putting new shocks on it next week, as the stocks have definitely been used and abused. I pulled the Uhaul from VA to IL and then IL to AR and I was doing 75-80 most of the time and got 13mpg at one point as my average on that journey.

considering our trucks have a v6, and they can compete with a half ton as far as towing and payload, I’m overly impressed with what the Tacoma has offered me as well as very capable off road abilities. Only thing I wish I would’ve done differently is found the long bed, but the short bed with a tonneau cover is fully capable of doing what I need.

Even with a decent AT tire, my MPG is pretty good. 265/75/16 Nittos. I average about 19-20 mpg, and these trucks don’t have any of that fancy cylinder deactivation and stuff that half tons are using in order to achieve low 20 average mpgs.

overall this generation Tacoma has been great and I’ve seen a few for sale recently with 150-200k so I have faith that in Toyota tradition these trucks will also stand the test of time.

if you wait for the 4th gen, definitely wait for the kinks to get worked out. We saw how the new Tundras played out lol

2006 TRD OR DC - loved it
2022 TRD Sport Premium - the best so far
Get the premium, all the bells and whistles are real nice. These trucks are real nice just stock.

Love mine, I did however drive a new Tundra that power plant is awesome that left me thinking about trading up, but still happy with the Taco. I even drove a V8 Tundra 2021 and didn't care for it.

Now if they put that turbo v6 in a Taco, I'll be the first in line to make that trade, but prefer the size and looks over a Taco more

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
Fuck no, my 3rd gen is nothing but a pos in comparison to my 2nd gen. Thanks for the updated interior and the complete lack of balls to climb anything.

Preciate ya Toyota, ya fucked up the Tacoma. Back to the land cruiser I go…

edit - at least it looks cool

Have had my 2016 since 0 miles, and I won't where get rid of it. Love it to death, and haven't had any problems that I didn't cause myself. Plan on having it for as long as possible.
