I'm looking at options to squeeze a bit more life from my 3rd gen, the frame rust is getting to the point of limiting the life left in the rig. Last week I had the right rear upper shock mount break through the bracket resulting with the top of the shock banging into the floor of the cargo area. A frame swap will be a long term repair, or buying a clean 2wd from FL and gutting my rig to convert it into a 4wd.

The short term "fix" seems to be out boarding the rear shocks, I've seen a few kits for an upper mount. I'd like to chat with someone that has done the conversion to find out what any trouble areas are, such as tire/wheel clearance issues, functionality of out boarding. Did you have to change the lower mount brackets to make it work? Questions like that...

    TIA !

Sorry to point you to another forum, T4R.org is just loaded with years of information and hundreds of useful threads more particular to our vehicles. Here's a few on the topic of outboarding your rear shocks. Your 4Runner sounds like the perfect candidate for this switch. I haven't done it myself but from everything I've read, yes, you need to be very mindful and meticulous about tire size and wheel specifications. Hope this helps!
