Thanks that should make it a lot easier once I see what the wires look like on the back.

I tapped into this for my voltage display, which is not keyed so it stays on all the time. Do you think the display draws enough power for me to be worried about it being on all the time? I also just installed a 5watt solar battery tender which is why I wanted the display to monitor my battery level as it was struggling with the lack of driving I've been doing for covid. But don't want the voltage display to cancel out any benefit of the charger.

So once you remove the Cigarette lighter you just spliced the wires for the voltmeter into the wires that would go to the Cig lighter?

They also make these in red, so i might be a little nicer on the eyes at night. https://www.amazon.com/Charger-Wate...eter-Motorcycle/dp/B07DGNQNLR?ref_=ast_sto_dp

The only thing I worry about with swapping to something like this is then you lose the ability to use the cig outlet for anything else, like air pump when camping, or charging something that isnt usb but comes with the cig outlet adapter. i think the voltmeter that plugs into the existing outlet is more versatile.

I know it's not as precise, but doesn't the volt meter in the instrument cluster indicate if your charging system is working or not?

There is no stock volt meter in the instrument cluster, just the dummy red battery light that indicates a low voltage/alternator failure. So yea if that light is on with the engine running you probably have a dead/dying alternator and/or battery. With a volt meter you can see exact voltage and anything like 13.5-14.4(ish) is normal operating range, and I would say less than 12.5 (running with no aux loads) you may have a pending issue.

(actual mechanics feel free to correct me just sharing general knowledge)
