    ok, my story time.

i went to a private christian high school. it served as a college prep/feeder school to the local christian colleges. the school curriculum was heavily STEM-focused, i was there for the christian education, which maybe is splitting hairs, but was a hair worth splitting--going to a school for core values is different than going for a STEM education, or 'ticking the right boxes' to get into a specific college. i was a 'C-D' student in most courses except all of the hands-on mechanical/tech/woodworking courses i was consistently a 'B' student. building stuff, working with my hands, was always what i wanted to do. i knew i couldn't be stuck behind a desk.

it got to junior year, i had to meet with the guidance counselor about future plans. she laid out 4 college pamphlets, and just said "so, which college are you going to?"

i just said, "none of them. college isn't for me"

she got this look on her face like i laughed while kicking a puppy.

i then asked her to pull up my grades, and made it clear that i knew i needed to be doing something hands-on, and STEM simply wouldn't work for me or my learning style.

some sort of trade/school is still a good idea, so i ended up going through an low voltage 'EST' program. given that i was closing in on 10 years of personal low voltage learning at that point, i got a full scholarship. it was an interesting time. though all that effort, i can't really say it got me anywhere with jobs. turns out few want to hire anyone unless you've got past experience, which is an ironic take on why no one can fill positions...

my sister did exactly that, though she admitted to wanting to go to college 'for the experience with my friends'. my mom insisted she at least minor in business management. she wasn't happy about it, but see's the relevance a years later. she works at an interior paint/flooring store now, helps people pick/coordinate colors, while making use of both parts of her college experience, which is pretty rare these days.

    Morning folks :hattip:

Nice breezy rain up here this morning. Soaking into the 1/2” layer of snow we got overnight. Hoping it all melts before it freezes into ice tonight :annoyed:

Long weekend :woot:Hope everyone gets an extra day off!

Paint the end grain and sticker your boards. Depending on your general humidity levels, you can guestimate that it may take up to 1 year per inch thickness to air dry your boards. Pick yourself up a contact moisture meter to check your boards before using them. The lower the moisture levels the better, I try to shoot for about 7% moisture content. And check multiple areas on the board. Lastly, you said you strapped them together, tighten up the straps seasonally as the wood dries out, helps to control wood movement. Happy woodworking.

I had one of those a very long time ago.

    Goodmorning crew :pccoffee:
Happy it's Friday. Been a slow week but little odd jobs here and there helped the week go by. Yesterday we made a modification to a belt guard on a large fan. Just cut a window in existing guard and covered with expanded metal, reinforced one mounting edge.
Tomorrow is my works holiday party. I attended the part the first 2 years I worked here but haven't gone since. I'm going to the party this year because my daughter wants to attend. From what I recall the prime rib was excellent but they're using a different caterer this year. Be interesting.
