Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) - Can some/all features be disabled?

i had a tray full of starbucks on my passenger side floor to take to a customer's office and mine locked up on me and flipped the entire tray over. Luckily i have all weathers so i was able to dump it out, but it scared the shit out of me and them poor ladies were missing some coffee lol

I've learned how to use the features and incorporate it into my daily driving. There's nothing really unbearable with the technology.

Man, do I love getting in my truck to go places.

 

I drive a 2019 highlander for work and it doesn't appear that you can have cruise control on and lane departure off. To be fair, its a work car so I have not really tried that hard to do it, but I did mess around with the settings some.

Can you have cruise control on and lane departure off on the 2023 Tacoma?

 

It's very easy to shut off and is independent from other systems on the Tacoma.


Lane departure means one of three different things, depending on make and model.

• Motorized wheel "correction", seen in many sedans and unibody SUVs. I have a friend that uses this in his RAV4 as a "poor-boys self drive." I have heard complaints from Subaru owners that theirs is so aggressive it's almost caused wrecks.
• Wheel vibration and/or sight increase in resistance, no motorized correction - my Mazda does this. I'm not a fan of the resistance thing, even when it's toned down, but I'll take it over motorized feedback any day.
• Audible alarm only, zero wheel feedback - the 3rd gen Tacoma does this. It's primitive but highly effective, and I appreciate it on a vehicle that's supposed to occasionally wander outside of the lines.

So the Tacoma lane departure isn't like others. It's just a beep beep noise. It disables with a button on the steering wheel.

 

That good news. On the highlander, when you turn on the cruise, you are forced to use the lane departure. Its just a beep and that is part of the problem, it is annoying.

I was looking to buy a 2024 Tacoma, but they appear to be having some launch issues. So, I am looking to pick up a 2023.

Sounds like if you REALLY want to disable this stuff all you have to do is go analog. That is, place a piece of tape or something over the forward facing radar and camera sensors. The vehicle will automatically turn them off.

there are switches for BSM, lane departure and Parking sensors and you can switch those off if you want

personally, the only feature I have turned off is the lane departure as I find it pretty useless and mostly annoying.

On the other hand, I find the adaptive cruise control to be pretty awesome. I was not a regular user of standard cruise control in my previous vehicles, but adaptive cruise is very nice. It even lets me shift gears to handle a grade when driving through the mountains without turning off. The best thing though. Is that I can confidently look at my phone for directions, etc. without having to worry about someone hitting their brakes in front of me…the car senses that and will slow down for me. Yes, yes…I can hear the safety nazis now…you should never text and drive. My uh friend told me that he actually uses the feature when he has to send a brief text. Not endorsing my friends position…just saying that’s what he does sometimes

 

^This is the only thing I want to do. I am good with all the rest of it. The lane departure bells/sounds do nothing but annoy and in a few cases startle me.

 

I hate this stuff too, but it did save me once from a car that was braking that I could not see. It was obscured in the setting sun on a hill. I hate it less.

The auto headlight feature is nice. I typically forget to adjust them and these LED lights will blind people. Cruise feature is ok, just wish it wasn’t the default.
