My ABS stopped working one day. Nothing eventful on my end, like hitting a curb or crashing. Long story short there is a break in the front left + signal wire. Sadly it’s not that short wire that wraps around the suspension. It’s the main mothership wiring harness. I was wondering if anyone else had a similar issue and where they found the damage to be. I was inspecting what I could see without taking things apart and I’m not seeing anything obvious. No chaffing, mice damage, etc. Truthfully I’m hoping someone else has had this issue because I’m not going to chase that wire from one end to the other. If I have to I m will some how come to live with my OCD knowing there’s a jerry rigged wire just going and to end dangling out.

I have lights but they are not tied into the factory harness

They typically break at movement points, Logicially but its too new to be that brittle so maybe can find the other connector end and work it from that possible connection.

worst best case scenario is find the wire in the harness and match the gauge and color then tie it from one end to the other and pray to god you can pull it through cleanly but it maybe tied to another string of wires

Mine went out so I took it to the dealer. Damn squirrels chewed my harness all around the battery.

It’s only 1 wire, you should be happy. It’s not a common failure point. My bet is once you start poking around and actually take stuff apart you’ll find where a rodent ate it up. Get that DMM out

This was an amazing advice by the way. I always like to make sure people with sound advice get thanked for it. I was skeptical, and to be frank the directions didn’t instill any confidence either but after fiddling with it for a bit and figuring out how it works it helped me narrow down the break in the harness. The break was 8” away from where I narrowed it down to with the tool. My guess is that it sends a sine wave through the wire for the receiver to pick up and that signal bleeds into other wires a little bit.

anyways once the electrical tape came off the break in the wire was pretty obvious. I want to say the wire may have been nicked at the factory just because there was a sharp cut in the wire. Needless to say the issue is resolved!

Awesome! I was a little worried that it would bleed with the metal frame and all but glad to hear it worked out well. I used to use those when chasing wires around drop ceilings at my school when I used to install communications cables. They worked really well, even around the metal ceiling frames and steel studs of the portable buildings, but with a little bleeding. It wasn’t too bad though and we got close enough to find the breaks like you did.

Great call, I too have done the same type of work and the main communications companies rely heavily on the tools. I however, have never thought to use it on a vehicle of mine, I will have to remember this one. Thanks.
