Rod holder idea - thread link

So many clever ideas and rod holders! Ski racks has always work for us, just that Ski racks can be very “ NOISEY “
Our style of fishing is baiting casting and or sliding baiting. Fishing for “Ulua’s”. I will carry a 12-15 foot fish gaff, a 12 pole with net, and slide gaffs if fishing off cliffs.

Because we fish in salt water , we can target dozens of species, requires all kinds of rods , reels. From 6lbs -80 lbs of fishing lines in the reels. Some species can only be caught daytime, others night time, and some anytime. Ours is a 24/7 style of fishing.

Carrying everything long , is a common problem?

I use this on top of my truck to carry my fishing poles. Much smaller profile than the ski racks and less noisy. I can get 4 baitcasting bass poles in one rack. You could probably get at least 2 larger surf reels in one.

On my rear trailer hitch I modified the tailgate carrier to height of the tailgate (had a welder extend the holder upwards. When off roading does not touch. But need to add straps on end from swaying.
Sorry no pictures ( rack is in storage/ heavy too ). Got a vinyl self bag style box shape carry bag goes in the metal basket. Able to mount a 151 qt here.

 

Best shot I have of cart in action: Yeti, Cabela waterproof / sand proof tackle bag, 5 gallon bucket w/ tackle box lid, rods, tools even fly 20 foot flag out of one of the rod holders.

 

Very nice. When I live on Oahu we did a lot of baiting casting. Every since I moved to the Big island of Hawaii, our style of fishing was on lava cliffs ( Slide baiting for the Ulua’s. ) I sure do miss fishing from sand beaches.

 

Apache rifle case with a few holes drilled in it. reels are out of the weather and locked in so they cant be stolen.

In Kona there are a lot of trailer boats. One a street with lots of trees , the trailer boats had his rods and reels in the holders, made a turn. One line caught a tree branch (yellow fishing line) it went for a couple of blocks. Very funny thing to see. Trolling size fishing reels.

 

Been there, done that! 11’ surf rod in a vertical bumper mount caught a low branch and before I figured out what that noise was, the entire reel unspooled, line snapped and broke the rod tip. I learned an expensive lesson that day.

 

My current method for dealing with 1pc rods

 

i want to eventually put some pvc tubing along the side of my bed for long term "hidden" storage my 10 and 11ft surf and salmon/steelhead rods....
but until i do that, i drafted up this quick and cheap roof hanger using twisted paracord.. my thinking is that its better than laying in the bed with things sliding around, but i see quick stops being a potential problem.

That 7'11" 1-pc rod on the diagonal doesn't quite fit. i think i'd rather transport it through the cab window.

 

Just wanted to share a quick, less than 10 min “mod” I did using other ideas, from around the forum/internet.

Purchased this aluminum rod holder from Amazon for approx $24 at the time.

Ended up using the stock cleats from the bed/rail system. I did have to “redrill” a hole due to placement of one of the holders.

So far so good. Going to see if I need to add a mini little bungee strap or anti theft device. Mind you this is just for a simple day trip to accommodate my needs. As well as something I can easily remove and store away.

 

Very nice! Just watch out for low hanging tree branches that may be crowding the road.

If you are going down well travelled urban roads, it won't be an issue.

I search out new locations off the beaten path, so I would need to angle mine back quite a bit.

 

Yes sir, currently all highway roads on the coast. But for sure ill be keeping an eye out.
