    Hi, there,

How do you change the oil filter on a 2006 Toyota Tacoma without making a mess?

When I worked at a Berkeley junkyard, decades ago, I could under a car and do the job in minutes and did not care much about making a mess. If any of you are old school, maybe you remember the bags of absorbent powders folks used to toss on spills?

But being married has reined in my old ways as the old lady likes things tidy. So, if any of you have a tip for getting the filter off without spilling too much, please let me know.

    Thanks.

I presume you have the V6? The bottle noted above is popular. Another is to attach a hose and run it down side of the engine. I recently saw a trick I have not attempted yet - slowly unscrew the oil filter until the antidrain valve opens, this will drain most of the oil back into the engine instead of pouring outside the filter. Of course, you’ll want to do this before draining the oil.

Ah, well that changes a few things. Haha, most of us complain about oil changes with the V6 because the filter sits inverted and oil can flow out in a rush, leaking over the side of the oil holder. I presume your filter ‘hangs’, like on L4 Corollas and Camrys. I wear latex gloves and slowly turn the filter. As soon as oil starts leaking on the sides, I rotate it quicker.

permanent installed hose... drains into pan on floor. Runs through hole in skid plate and cap off end when done draining. In the 15 years since doing this mod never had one drop on garage floor. For the 4.0L V6...

I just changed the filter on my 4.0 and to my surprise, nothing came out. Nothing. Not a drop.
Truck sat for a few hours before this.
I'm guessing the anti-drain back gadget was not working. Wix filter.

I normally use a cup or old water bottle, but I really like this hose mod.

changing the filter on a 4 banger is old school. Get a filter wrench that you attach your ratchet wrench (with extension) and carefully remove the filter...that's all there is to it.

This is what I use but I use a plastic cup threaded w/ some tie wire. Works great to collect oil from the filter on the 4.0L V6

I used to use a hose and a bottle but that was a PITA and really overkill for the small amount of oil that leaks out. Nowadays I just put a few paper towels in an empty grocery bag and set it under the drain nipple. No muss, no fuss.

+1 on the oil udder, works fairly well on my 4 cyl.

Before I had that I'd take an old bread bag, slide it over my arm, let it drip as much as possible in the pan, then when i finally unscrewed it turn the bag inside out.
Very little oil makes it to your armpit that way:)

Same here. But I had an OEM filter , but and truck was sitting for apx 2 weeks . Thinking the anti drain back valve only holds oil for a short period of time ?
