OK I see what you mean. Those fill covers do look rather dorky.

My Colorado was solid across except the indents so if you wanted fogs you could cut the holes.

I think HID projectors are the way to go, I built my first set with these. They have great output and cutoff and the retrofit was not very hard.

    https://www.theretrofitsource.com/bi-xenon-acme-h1-stage-3-kit-CRK-ACME-H1?quantity=1

But I am thinking I am going to swap them out for these, the acmes arent bad but Id prefer LED due to them probably being more reliable. Havent had issues yet but I think I will.

There was a time I agreed with you about HID retrofits, but I've learned my lesson and won't ever do that again. The retrofit process isn't all that difficult and the results can be awesome. The issue I have is putting a high/low projector in a headlight housing puts a solenoid inside the housing that isn't serviceable unless you pull the system apart. I had the solenoid start to stick, pulled the retrofits out and will never go back to that setup again. This was a while ago, but it left a bad taste regarding retrofits. I'd only consider a retrofit in the future if the housing had a dedicated low beam and separate high beam lights. I know there are a lot of retrofits out there that are problem free, that was not my experience and I went back to simplicity (currently running a drop in LED kit).

The only reason I dicked around with my turd gen low beams. The high beams are still factory, likely only to be changed when they die but for factory/similar halogen. They do the trick and get used infrequently. I got ditch lights, fog lights, and H9 low beams (but amber). I can see plenty with what I got. I MIGHT chuck some scene lights on the roof rack, TBD.

Thats a great point. Did they get stuck in hi beam mode? Seems like a good place for someone to innovate to get the solenoid out of the housing.

I don't remember which way they got stuck, I think they got stuck in low, but I seem to recall blowing a fuse because the solenoid wouldn't cycle. The issue is, the fuse you blow is for the lights themselves. TRS was fine to work with, they warrantied the part, but it's a PITA to actually replace said part. I yanked them out and went back to halogens on the Tacoma. Since then, I've not been compelled to do another retrofit.

Again though, I know there are a lot of them out there running problem free, I just didn't like knowing there's a solenoid in there that can fail and I can't get at it.

If they're anything like my projectors, Morimoto D2 gen4's then the solenoid just move the cutoff up and out of the way for high beams. Good Idea to have one you could mount to the back of the headlight housing, but I think it would be hard to do and make look good

With a power planer, sure. If you're talking a pedestal or cabinet type machine, now you're talking

I made one of those but the bit I used caused more tearout then it was even worth. A sharp handplane can get some work done when its set up correctly.

Yep, I use a hand plane when it's useful. When there are big misalignments between boards, lots of knots, or a lot of glue, a router sled with a large bit can save a hell of a lot of time, even if you finish with a hand plane.

I’m not seeing the vision. I think I need to see it in person, it doesn’t seem to have a ‘good side’ in the photos I’ve seen so far. I read what it’s supposed to signify, I’m just not getting the artwork at all. Of course, This is all coming from someone with the art taste of a second grader.

The real estate alone that thing occupies is easily a few million…. I would have preferred they kept the green space but… it all looks the same from my house.

Could have done a LOT with the land and funds that I think MLK would have preferred than...that.

I was about to do retrofit long ago and your experience changed my mind. Much as I hear the aftermarket ones aren't great, they at least got the right idea of a separate light for low and for high beams which would eliminate the issue you had.
