    This, absolutely this. While you wont typically see catastrophic failures of ejecting your board, you will see a lot of delamination of the wood fibers on the side that exits the planer last. The planer blades peel the wood fibers off along the edge grain and it comes out looking like a hot mess. You can plan around this by building oversized and cutting square after the planer or by making a sacrificial frame/border that you cut off after the trips through the planer. I've built a frame around the board in the past and just zipped it off with the table saw after I was finished.
