A bit of a story.
I went to Dollar Tree to get a couple things before heading back up to my jobsite. On my way in I see a very pregnant woman in her mid to late 20s with a young child walking towards the store next door. A tweaker starts walking towards them asking loudly for money. First $2, then $1, then 25 cents, then to buy him something. She said she had no cash and he kept asking. This was quick, maybe 5 seconds total.
I changed the direction I was walking as soon as he first asked for money because I didn't like his tone towards her and could tell right away he was tweaking. When he looked up and saw me walking directly towards them, he stopped talking and started walking away from them and towards the Dollar Tree. He somewhat rushed past when he saw I turned back the way I was originally going (and right to where he was walking).
He didn't say a word but glanced at me and kept walking towards a couple that was further away by a different store.
I know I look pissed off even when I'm not, but it is still rare (though it has happened before) that I scare someone away without even having a chance to say a word.
As soon as I walked towards them, my mind was already ready for a violent confrontation as the homeless tweakers that have been imported into the town are getting more pushy and becoming violent when people refuse to give them money. I'm glad it happened the way it did. I'd rather he had gotten violent with me instead of the woman and her kid, but I'm glad he got scared off so the kid wouldn't have had to witness anything.

Had a druggie try a stunt on me. I'm walking through a commercial area. See this dude approach a couple in a parked car. They roll their windows up. He turns, sees me, and starts towards me. I try ignoring him first, but he's coming up on me from my 4 o'clock position. I get the sense he's looking to mug someone for money. Turn to face him and walk towards him. He stops, and I speak "walk away" I remember his pupils were huge. He stopped, and turned away from me and walked off, not saying a word. The couple drove up alongside me, and we chatted; the druggie was demanding money from them. Definitely had some adrenaline going in me, as I wasn't sure how that was going to turn out.

 

It's getting worse all the time. They have been actively inviting junkies and homeless into town with treatment (we will give you free drugs and clean needles) facilities and river view homeless camps. The city parks are no longer safe to use because of increased violence, drug use, and needles being left on the ground all over the place because they can go get new ones for free.
