Do you not remember the 80s and 90s, turbocharged engines aren't anything new for them and many of their Europe and Japan market cars use turbocharged smaller displacement engines exclusively. Engines over 2.0L are uncommon in Japan, but they have the same desire for power we do here and have been turbo charging for decades. The technology has come a long way and is pretty damn reliable. Three of Toyota's most iconic engines are factory turbocharged models (2JZ-GTE, 3S-GTE, and 7M-GTE) and those aren't even new ones, but are quite long lived. Shit even my far lower quality turbocharged BMW made it over 10years without any major maintenance to the drivetrain, and when I finally did have to work on it, it just needed fresh direct injectors, the turbocharging system was still flawless even when I turned it up a few PSI.

These new tangled trunk engines will be the death of us. It’s too bad no one’s been building them reliably for the last several decades.

Those anecdotal words won’t be of much comfort to people stuck with thousands of dollars in turbo repairs, and new Tundra owners bit by turbo issues. Unless they happen to own a bank. It’s great for shops though, so there’s that.

BTW, I stopped by a TOYOTA stealership yesterday, that used to be packed with tons on new vehicles and instead was full with used ones made up of all makes and models.

Only one new Taco on the lot and one on the delivery truck. But there were a lot of new Tundras on the lot. Why is that?

Truth is, automakers want to make more money = power thru turbo = money brings more power + you get the women :D

On today's episode of "My kids just taught me how to use the internet"

Wait till he finds out that even turbocharged gasoline engines are going to be going by the wayside soon enough for electric. Boy will that be a tirade

This is all that needs to be said about Scotty Kilmer.

As for a turbo V4 versus the third generation's V6, a turbo adds complexity to the engine. Time will tell if manufacturers like Toyota can make turbo engines as reliable as the traditional ones, but for now steer clear of the first couple of production years of the Gen 4 until they figure it out.

I used to watch Scotty quite a bit. However, the information he gives is usually very generalized and usually based on "I've seen X," or extremes that could happen even though they're highly unlikely (see Fumoto valve) rather than actual factual statistics, particularly for specific vehicles. I believe he one time spoke highly about the EcoBoost engines from Ford before criticizing them several years later without giving specifics as to why other than the typical generic argument.
