I got on the highway and noticed she may be revving high. Its a 05' off road sr5 6 speed and when I’m doing 70 mph, I’m around 3,000 RPM. When I let off the gas and both the clutch is in and I’m not in any gear the RPMs hang around 2,000. Shouldn’t, they drop to 780ish? When I’m costing at low speeds the RPMs stay around 1500 then drop to 780 when I come to a complete stop. Is this acting right? I have an aftermarket exhaust and sometimes when it hangs I can hear the throatyness of it around 2000 RPMs or 1500 and then idle near 780 and it goes away. Sometimes it will say 1500 RPM and it will sound like 780. What could be going on?

You’re not crazy, and it’s not normal unless you’re driving the taco. I think it’s for emissions. Very annoying indeed.

Sounds fairly normal, the PCM is programmed to hold RPMs up while moving in neutral. Kind of anoying at times but not much can be done about it, tuning can calm it down a bit but I don't think it can be totally eliminated.
Mine typically hangs around 900-1200 coasting, prior to tuning it was a bit higher (like 1000-1400).

Your saying it's not coming down to base idle (~750 RPM) when stopped at operating temp?

    Engine fully warm?
    Or is it still “cold”?

Is your engine getting up to operating temp? It won't come down to base idle or learn it's idle until coolant temp reaches 174F

Do you have an engine light on?
Typically any vacuum leak large enough to affect the idle would cause a lean code to set.
Also make sure your floor mat isn't on top of your gas pedal, may sound stupid but I have had one come in the shop before with a high Idle complaint and that's all it was.

I cant figure out the high idle at rest its around 1100 all the time once a week it read 780ish. I can hear the exhaust rev up at this time. I've heard vacuum leak or PCV valve. Thoughts? If its idleing this high wont my RPMs be high as well when driving?

Clean the throttle body and MAF. unplug your battery and let the truck relearn the idle.

I could see the truck wanting to keep a higher RMP at higher speeds when in nutral so that whenever the gear/clutch is re-engaged, it's a closer match to the proper RMPs (rev matching)?? More of a sports car thing, but I guess it would apply to any manual transmission vehicle :)

Its totally normal on manual trucks. Its called "throttle cracker" in the tune. It can be fully eliminated via a tune if you want. Its not for emissions reasons its for "drivability" to keep rpms up between gear changes so you dont have to blip the throttle etc. Its annoying if you are used to an older car that would return to idle as one would expect.
