    Hey everyone,
My longtime neighbor recently made the decision to go into a nursing home. He needed to sell his truck and reached out to my family to see if any of us wanted it. It is a 2009 Regular Cab, 2wd, 4 cylinder with only 7,700 miles on it. He has it serviced every 6 months and drove it every week. We got it inspected and the only things it needed was new headrests, a windshield, and windshield wipers. It wasn’t exactly my dream car with it just being 2WD, no real features, and so low, but it was in great shape and I knew he would give us a good deal. I tried to offer him $9,000 but he wouldn’t accept that much and kept trying to just give it to me after a lot of arguing I struggled to get him to even accept what ended up being the final offer of $2,000. After a long battle with Toyota financial services to get the Lien Release, which my neighbor had lost, the truck was mine and with the deal I got I had plenty of left over cash to modify the truck to more of my taste, which I have started to do in the past month or so. I’m going to document that here and if I think people might be able to help maybe ask some questions! I am new to Tacomaworld so I apologize if I do something wrong!

"Your truck" sounds like it was a valued possession of your neighbors. It might not be the perfect truck but it doesn't have to be your last truck either. To your neighbor, selling or giving it away to someone he feels will value, appreciate, and take care of it for him sounds to me like a classic Win/Win situation.

If I think about my father and if you really wanted to make-hiss-day, take a few pictures and every now and then, pay him a visit and show him how you are taking care of his valued possession. Congrats and Best of Luck!

5 lug pride! That's a great truck. Only thing to be aware of is that there's a lot more ease in modding/lifting/whatever a 6 lug. Maybe just drive it and enjoy it like it is for a few years.

A few, mainly added skids. I like leaving the suspension alone. I drive forest service dirt roafs in the desert west extremely extremely too fast. Toyota nailed this suspension going 65 across desert terrain. Changing it is dumb unless you have a specific need like crawling or mud.
Leave her as she is. She looks amazing being her big bad ass stock self.

thank you! I plan on just that. He was like an older relative to me growing up and I have tried to visit him as much as possible before going back to school. I am planning on sending him holiday cards with updates and visiting as much as possible. He doesn’t have much family so I know what this means to him and plan to honor him. I know he would be happy to have me getting into playing around with the truck.

Wow, what a story. I would love to have that truck. The simpler the better, I’m getting old I guess…

Why do anything to the truck? It’s a bare bones basic 2 wheel drive with super low miles. Don’t misunderstand, I think it’s a great little truck and you are fortunate to have it. You can do all the mods you want but it won’t change the fact that it’s a bare bones 14 year old truck. If you just have to do some mods do something like upgrading the stereo system. Leave the truck as it is and enjoy owning and driving it. The money you saved either put it in savings (I know that’s a foreign concept to many of the youthful) or spend it on something like your education. In any event you are fortunate indeed have a great truck for so little $$$, enjoy the hell out of it.

Heck of a deal, you definitely scored. A few years ago I would have chopped off an appendage in exchange for it.

    Agree!

    What a great story!

You're fortunate to be in a position to accept such an offer...your neighbor must trust you!

Do as suggested and update previous owner with pics...I'm sure you'll bring him to tears with the care you take with his truck.

    Nice truck.

Some minor touches would be nice. Just don't try to make it into something it isn't.

The PO obviously loved that little truck, and basically gifted it to someone he deemed a worthy custodian, you. I'd respect that if I were in your shoes.

Just kidding, you are a lucky individual and apparently a decent one as well. The fact that he wanted to give it to you means a lot! Congratulations and enjoy the gift.
