The issue with the autopilot is most likely because tesla's systems are more camera based where other manufacturers who've implemented self-driving have kept with different radar/lidar systems that are not as impacted by weather and light conditions.

 

Thanks Crash! I installed the better bulbs in my '18 4Rnr over the weekend and with the exception of me not getting them aligned in the mounting assembly correctly the first time (take your time to make sure they are seated all the way) , it was easy and works so much better than the crappy stock illumination! Pulled apart an extra set of 4Runner bi-LEDs I bought and did some exploring. Found the little nub that causes the dark spot nobody likes:


It doesn’t appear to me to serve a purpose in either the up (low beam only) or down (high beam) position:


Any of the lighting experts here want to educate me as to the purpose of that nub? Or is it safe to carefully extract it?

 

It is there to reduce light/glare to oncoming drivers, and possibly reflected glare off wet roads. Many modern lights have a notch in the pattern at that location, like Tesla. What is strange about the 4runner version is it isn't a notch all the way to the top of the pattern like others, it is just a floating spot in the pattern which looks very odd.

I really really hate my LED lights. This is why. Never had this problem with my g2 halogen.

 

Snow is the achilles heal of LED headlights. You could look to swap to the halogens if it is a constant problem. I’d recommend upgrading your fogs to the DD SS3 Max in selective yellow. They run extremely hot and will not freeze over while providing very strong output, so if your headlights fail due to snow you will not be left totally blind. Fogs are only enough for slow speed, not a headlight replacement, but much better than nothing till you can clear your lights.

 

Might be a dumb question. Is this normal? I've never seen this, or have never paid close enough attention.

Looks like the glare caps became brittle and flaked off from the heat. These were in the Crosstrek.

Far less than ideal, but has been reported before though that case looks exceptionally bad.

 

I'm might check the new set a month in and see how they're doing and actually track longevity. The Crosstrek has a glare cap built into the reflector housing so I'm not too concerned. But the only part of the coating holding was the tip.

I was gifted these adaptor harnesses’ for the H9 conversion (a buddy converted to LED headlamps). I was initially going to pull the tab out as mentioned.

Guess i’ll try these out for a few months and see how well they hold up. Also ordered the Phillips bulbs as listed.

@crashnburn80 As I just can't make myself let go of the $$$ to upgrade to the DD Max right now (or any other led), and need the heat output for Duluth's winter, which halogen would you recommend for an amber/yellow fog upgrade in the 2017 Taco? It seems I read this in one of the posts somehwere, but there are sooo many, I can't relocate it. Possibly it could be added to the recommended bulbs at the start of this thread?

Am about to order the Tungsram Platinum's for the low beams, but want the amber/yellow for the fogs.

What halogen upgrade is recommended for high beams?

Actually, no, I would not look there, as it states LED in the title and I am specifically am not looking for LED, as stated in my post.

Further, he recommends both headlights AND fog lights (halogen for both) in post number two of this thread,... which I also referenced in my post.

I would not suggest Sylvania Fog Vision, as it is not a fully coated bulb, so the yellow will not be as rich.

Of the 3, the Osrams seem promising with the +60 claim, and the 2600k color temp should provide a good yellow. Hellas slightly higher color temp will be a slightly lighter yellow, but would then also have slightly less filtration loss for better output. Nokya's 2500k is the lowest color temp of all which should give the richest yellow, but that also means taking the most filtration loss and not having a + efficiency architecture to improve output intensity so it will likely be the lowest in output intensity. But again, all that is by spec, I haven't tested any of these. For what you are looking for, I'd likely try the Osram Fog Breaker.

While I view selective yellow as critical for LED fog lamps due to their high color temps, halogens have a much lower color temp. The Tungsram Platinums are a good choice for the fogs as well and would match the headlights and have higher output intensity than the Osrams. But if wanting yellow, I'd try the Osrams.

Note that for others, only 16-19 TRD trucks have H11 fogs that can take these bulbs. Other trucks are equipped with much lower performing H16s that have far more limited options.

 

Another option is to color tint the lens and use a high performance clear bulb.

 

I am interested to find the best LED bulb to fit the H16 housing.
