Had my first oil change today at 4900 miles. Got almost home and warning messages started popping up about low oil. Pulled in garage and pulled dip stick no oil on stick. Look under truck and oil is all over the underneath and dripping all over garage floor. Called dealer and they sent a guy to my house to check it out. He said mine is the second one recently and it’s Toyota’s fault because they said it was ok to not put that bottom o ring on new everytime. When he pulled the bottom of filter housing off, there wasn’t an o ring on it at all. He put on new o rings and new filter in the housing and proceeded to fill it up with oil. I said how do you know it needs the full 6.2 quarts of oil you don’t know how much is still in the pan and motor. He said the filter housing is empty so it’s empty on oil. He puts 6.2 quarts in it and pulls the dip stick and shows me it is a tad above full, the truck was on an incline and running when he checked it. I put truck back in garage on level surface and waited a good while and checked oil, showing way above full mark. Called dealer and left voicemail on the general managers phone and he never called me back. Worried about driving it, but I have no other vehicle. Stay away from Toyota dealer in Evansville Indiana.

I agree it is idiotic. The guy was laying under my truck in the dirty driveway rolling around and even hopped in my driver seat at one point.

Your probably right, it’s a shame you can’t get a simple oil change done at a dealership.

Next time make an appointment in advance and request that the master technician to do it, instead of the lube tech if you’re not a diy guy.
I let the dealer change my oil at roughly 2000 miles, it had been a year since I had changed it at 1000 miles. It was my free one. The lube tech managed to get oil all over my seat and my floor, I knew I shouldn’t have let them touch it. He left a rag under the hood, the service writer said he had his “best” guy on it. I don’t know why they won’t just give us a free oil filter so we can do it ourselves. The dealership is never touching my truck again.

DIY oil changes tend to be carefully executed. It's not rocket science, & it's satisfying to know with a certainty it's all done according to Hoyle.

Your truck is most likely fine, but the dealership response is unacceptable IMO. Did they clean your truck completely? Undercarriage? Engine? Did they offer you anything to compensate for the inconvenience? No return phone call from service manager after this? Are you kidding? Way above full oil is not good. They need to make this completely right. I would make a formal complaint for sure. Agree with others that when you do your own service, you know it’s done right, but all of us don’t have the time. Sorry you had this experience.

Scary story. Now I'm afraid to take my truck in for it's first oil change down the road (I'm only at 250 miles total on my new '23)

The guy they sent up here just threw some oil dry mats over the puddles in my garage and wiped the underside of my truck with some shop towels. Didn’t even call me back let alone offer any compensation

That is sad, the guy had one job, a simple job.

It’s time to bypass the freebie, get a real person, no a clown to service and maintain a $40k purchase.

OP I'd be livid and have only two words for the next time:

    Reputable shop

Most dealerships do a good job and anyone can make a mistake. I take my truck to local dealer with no problems in many years and will continue. So I wouldn’t be scared by what’s probably a one off.

But if I was Service Manager in Evansville, In. I would have brought that Tacoma back in immediately and cleaned it thoroughly followed by a proper service to make this right. I would have given the customer a free loaner car and apologized. I would make a note of the incident in case any following engine problems might be related. I would assure him this will not happen again and at least offer some free services for future use. And get your garage and driveway cleaned too. No brainer folks!

This is Toyota for crying out loud. Their calling cards are quality and reliability!

Get the extended warranty from them or trade it in. If the engine was starved of oil for even a few seconds you could have burnt/scored bearings. Tick tock tick tock

Both of the local "reputable" Toyota dealers scratched my truck during the first two free services. I have done all the service myself since.
