Funny. I hear this all the time yet as a lifelong CA resident I've yet to actually see or feel an increase. I've spent lots of time living in what many would deem "high crime" areas. I've lived in rural areas, big and small cities, as well as suburbs. I've lived in red areas and I've lived in blue areas, low income areas and middle/upper-middle income areas.

We see more crime on the news and populations have increased so absolute numbers of crimes have increased but when you look at the data there have not been massive increases in crime overall. You can find individual data points to support arguments for crime increases or decreases - you just have to cherry pick data that backs up your side of the argument. But when you look at it in aggregate, crime has generally decreased over the past 30yrs. More recently it's leveled out with some years seeing increases, some years seeing decreases. And lots of variations in types of crime (property crimes may increase one year while simultaneously violent crimes may drop in that year). There definitely is not a sustained upward trend - at least not yet. Maybe we're just at the very, very beginning and it'll get worse. But as of yet the data does not back up what you hear reported in just about any form of media. But that should be no surprise, most media out there isn't trustworthy as their motive isn't to tell the truth it's to get as many clicks on their ads as possible.

An exception is catalytic converter theft. Now that IS rampant. But, car stereo theft also used to be rampant in the 80-90's and that's simply nonexistant these days. I feel this is a good example of the same type of crime, same type of criminal but just stealing something new. That's hardly a change in overall theft. There are often changes in crimes which make people think it has increased but really it's just changed.

I don't expect to change anyone's mind here. Everyone loves to hate CA and those who do are generally pretty entrenched in that viewpoint. But, I do feel it's worth having a counterpoint to all the California slander that goes on as most of us that live here don't actually feel that it's a shitty place which is going down the drain :crapstorm:

As someone who has also lived in CA his whole life, I would have to agree with this. The only noticeable increases I've seen are with homeless. That said, I definitely feel it's going down the drain, but not because of crime. Lots to do with the people and the cost of living. But if you can deal, it's still a great place IMO.

    You guys are crazy.
The whole national average rose to an all time high during 2020, no surprise there. Since then California has gone up 6% of 390 something compared to the national average in 2020 and is 16th worst state in the country for crime per capita.

That said, the appalling crimes are in localities. Cities. It’s like that in all cities, where Bakersfield is like 7th nationally or something.

This is just for violent crimes only. California isn’t St. Louis or Detroit, but it’s not all that great.
Most of these crime statics are on the Bureau website if you still believe in some of the institutions as far as reference are concerned.

Like I said, you can pick and choose stats to back up any point one would want to make. The year over year stats bounce around back and forth all the time. A year over year increase of 6% is meaningless. You need to look for a SUSTAINED increase to show a trend which proves an overall increase over time.

Here’s what the trend actually looks like over time. As you can see, there is not some drastic, sustained increase over the past 5-10yrs. Maybe we’re at the beginning of that upward trend. Maybe not. No one knows. We’ll all find out over the next few years.

I never even indicated that there was a massive uptick just as I never compared anything to the 1960s. I stated the same data your looking at compared to the national average, and stated where California stood.

Essentially your rebut to me saying California doesn’t rank well in violent crime compared to the national average is: it hasn’t gone up that much in the last 20 years.

    How does that make sense?

Oh the wonderful shit hole that is Bakersfield:rofl:

If you ever visit, stay west of highway 99!!!! The majority of the city is just fine, but the bad parts are really bad. As you know, that is how it is in all cities. I'm just excited that you said Bakersfield. My wife and I always fist bump when we're watching TV or a movie and Bakersfield gets brought up. Lame, I know.

I am responsible for my own personal security not the police. The courts decided this not me. Therefore I do not travel where possession of a firearm that is loaded is prohibited. I vote with my feet and my wallet and assiduously avoid CA, CT, MA, NJ, NY or more local venues that abridge my 2nd Amendment rights.

Those members that have to or choose to live in restrictive states -
I have no answers. When I lived in AZ and visited CA due to dating a gal from there I followed Federal Law as regarding interstate travel with a handgun.

Calguns.net is a great resource for understanding and keeping up with their laws. As bad as California is they at least don't have destination requirements for transportation like some other states.
