This happened on my way home Saturday night.

Can't figure out why the damn cop was behind the car off the expressway in the emergency lane instead of warning people of the car in the fast lane.

Also will never figure out how the only damage to my truck was the rear end. I thought I got off without any metal damage till I got it home in my garage.

There were 4 young kids in the Mustang I hit. In the still pictures from the video you can see how things could have been way worst.

Wow, close call! Glad you are OK! Probably a good idea to slow down even more when there is bad visibility along with emergency lights. It’s good there was room to move over for the mustang after passing the u-haul. Were they concerned about a “possible” hit and run?

Oh- you mentioned not knowing damage till you got home… glad it wasn’t worse- what a scary thing. My dad almost hit a abandoned trailer sitting in the dark in the fast lane once, that was close.

I saw that the fender flair was damaged, and the tail light was only hanging by the wires. It was dark and raining didn't see the full extent of the damage till I got it home in the garage.

My insurance company said they'd tow it to the dealership for repair. I didn't feel to comfortable driving with a left tail light missing.

I'm hoping they don't have to replace the whole left side of the bed. It has a pretty good rip in the metal.

It’s dark & raining, vehicle to the right is slowing and several vehicles with flashing lights, including emergency vehicle are stationary on the roadway.

    Should I ?
    A. Continue at the same rate of speed.
    B. Slow down and scan for danger.

    Well
Oh. Let me guess.. 3. Be an idiot, disregard the emergency flashing lights, it’s raining (poor visibility) speed up and get away.

in many states it’s the law to slow and proceed cautiously. Glad I wasn’t the officer there. I would give you multiple tickets,
Failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. excessive speed for road conditions, and others, you’re lucky you didn’t hit a person.
Take a safety class. You are not the only person on the road.

A couple of you seem like the people I love to hate while driving.

You see a cop car with lights on and you automatically slow down. We call those idiots rubber neckers around here. Backs up traffic for miles for no reason.

For the record I did slow down to around 60 MPH.

I know the laws. I was careful, the ass hole cop should have been blocking the car that was actually in the fast lane of the expressway.

Complying with Florida’s Move Over Law:

    Move Over

    • As soon as it is safe to do so, vacate the lane closest to the stationary emergency vehicle, sanitation vehicle, utility service vehicle, wrecker, or road and bridge maintenance or construction vehicle when driving on an interstate highway or other highway with two or more lanes.
    • Always signal your intention to change lanes.
    • Be prepared to allow those who are attempting to move over into the next lane.
    Slow Down

    • If moving over cannot be safely accomplished, slow down to a speed that is 20 mph less than the posted speed limit when the posted speed limit is 25 mph or greater; or travel at 5 mph when the posted speed limit is 20 mph or less when driving on a two-lane road.

Slowing down to 60 mph at night, in the rain, with multiple flashing light vehicles & a emergency light flashing vehicle, almost slamming directly into another vehicle and calling others idiots is priceless.

    Carry on “Einstein”.

You were flying in the fast lane, in the rain, could see the car's hazard lights and the cop's lights and didn't slow down. I would be looking at this as a win for you. Be happy you only escaped with minor damage.

The cop was probably on that side of the road because he was waiting for another unit or he wouldn't risk placing himself in the fast lane because of drivers who don't slow down in the rain or proceed with caution when emergency lights are flashing. Drivers like you.

Funny... you're the one with the busted up Taco.

If you couldn’t see the red car sitting in the road in front of you well enough to avoid it…especially with the forewarning that something was amiss provided by the cops… maybe you were going too fast.

OP was going a bit faster than 60mph when he went through the accident scene- using the GPS coordinates in his video, the last 6 seconds before he hit the mustang he traveled about 580 feet which means its an average of about 66mph.
    Note: I said about…

"I would go nuts if I had to drive 65mph.

I drive 52 miles a day round trip, 40 of those are on 95 between Palm Coast and Ormond Beach then back to Palm Coast.

I get in the fast lane and roll with it. Usually between 80 to 90mph. I fill up between 6 to 7 days when it gets to a 1/4 tank.

According to the mileage thing on the truck I average between 19.5 to 20.5 a gallon."

I'd probably consider taking that video down, until you see what happens. I am not a lawyer, but I think you could be found to be at fault for this incident.
