Hello! I am a new member and just (kind of) pulled the trigger on my first Tacoma. I put $ down to hold a new 23 Off-Road with a manual transmission yesterday and am having some second thoughts after seeing this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_yW1G7VYes
Looking at the comments, it seems like a lot of people were experiencing issues with clutch on the manual transmission on the 3rd gen Tacomas. I really wanted a manual transmission, but place reliability above that. For the $$$ this truck is costing, I don't want to have to fix anything for a long, long time. I was seeing comments about people having to replace the clutch at 30k and am having some serious second thoughts, and maybe a panic attack or two. I emailed the dealer to ask about pricing on a couple automatics they had on lot. I really wanted a manual, but not if it is going to give me problems. I figured this was the place to ask. Any suggestions, recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

At about 120k on stock clutch in a '16. Zero clutch problems. Take squeaky wheels with a grain of salt and some perspective.

Don't sweat it. It's well known that these 6M squeak. The actuator can be annoying as well. Get the 6M.

If you know how to drive a manual there is no way you are going to burn up your clutch in 30K. You bought an awesome truck, dont worry just go enjoy it!

14 months, 11,500 miles and successfully teaching my husband to drive a manual transmission on my 2021 and zero issues.

Clutches are technically wear items but only if you’re completely doing it wrong will you have to change at 30k. Lots of people go a couple hundred thousand miles on original clutch — it’s all down to how you drive it (or abuse it).

Keep your deposit and enjoy your truck when you get it. Likely the last generation Tacoma with a manual.

Have you driven manuals before ?
Do you have a steep driveway you need to reverse up?
Do you plan on towing or rock crawling ?

If the answers are no get the stick

The 6M is bulletproof. More details here. They just squeak which can be annoying. It doesn't affect reliability. My Brand new 1992 Toyota 4X4 truck still had the original clutch in it when I sold it 14 years later. Enjoy!

Thank you all so much for the responses! I am feeling a bit better now. I am already loving this forum :). I have had quite a few manuals in my time. My last two cars (mini cooper & audi s4) were, and my bike is. I've never burned out a clutch. No steep driveway. Not planning on towing anytime soon, but wouldn't rule it out. I'm probably going to do some light off-roading with the kids for fun, but don't think I will be getting into rock crawling anytime soon. I am paying far more for this than I have any other vehicle and I want to make sure I am making the right choice. I definitely don't want to have to worry about repairs anytime soon. I am doing this purchase a bit sooner than I was planning because I am guessing there will be no more manual on the redesign next year.

Every manual transmission vehicle is different, every one has it's quirks. I got used to my Tacoma manual right away and don't plan on changing anything about it.
Previous manuals were a 2013 ferd focus and a 1986, 94 and 96 S10. There was a 3 on the tree way back when too.

    Welcome to the forum.

Lots of great info here, but as many enthusiast forums you'll find occasionally the noise to good info ratio can be annoying. This also means, for the small amount of issues these trucks have, you'll hear about it more here than out there in the real world. Doesn't mean they don't exist, just that it isn't nearly as common as it's touted to be.

I have had two manual trans Tacoma's. No issues at all.

    Period.

The only time in 35 years of driving manuals, the only clutch I had to change was the car I bought that needed a clutch put in it.

Now the 2021 DCSB automatic I had, was a terrible shifting automatic. Even with a tune it never shifted right or at the right time into the right gear.

Stick with the manual. Quit watching click bate YouTube videos. And relax...

The only clutch I ever nuked was in a '69 Z/28. I think the 10" slicks were the culprit.

I had an issue with a creaking clutch pedal at about 20,000 miles and the dealership fixed it for free because there is a TSB out on it. After that never an issue again. Just recently did an accumulator mod and I regret not doing it sooner. Get it and don’t look back.

Man, I got 1:35 into that video and wanted to stick forks into my own ears. I never saw a slow motion drama queen before, and I don't need to see anymore.

Canadian Camber, thank you for the super informative video link! That was awesome and reassuring. lol solid advice on the clickbait vids 513! I will email them back and carry through with the manual plan. Thank you all for the input, it is truly appreciated! I will now go back to worrying about replacing the speakers. I have already been combing through the threads on here about speaker swap and amp options. It will probably be my first mod and possibly my last after the wife murders me.
