    Hello,

I live in Alaska and traveling south from Anchorage gas stations are pirty far apart. Also the farther you go out the more the price of gas goes up.

So I am asking if any on has installed a secondary tank or a new tank from a 2010 tacoma that is 20 gallons or any after market fuel tanks.

I've though of this as well. I came across this site
    http://www.justgastanks.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=326_421&products_id=1424
A tank that is 53"X6"X17" will be nice an slim span the whole width of the bottom of a long box (not between the wheel wells) would give you about 23 US gal.
there are a few ways I have thought to refuel.
    1. Just have a small pump and get out and do it.
    2. a line with a valve gravity fed into the trucks tank. (permanent)
    3. My favorite. Fuel safe quick connections plumbed to the main tank with a solenoid valve wire to inside the truck. Flip a switch it opens the valve and gravity pulls fuel into the tank when needed, without having to stop. Quick connections allow for the tank to be easily removed when not needed.
    4. dual sender/pump units. similar to fords dual tank setups only aftermarket.

I've looked at everything from removing the spare tire and putting a tank in there to getting a tank from an old toyota pickup and fitting it under the passenger side. I think what i have laid out is the easiest most trouble free option.

Would something like this in the front of the truck bed work for you?

When its not full it is really easy to move around. Won't rust. Not too expensive. When the gas light comes on, you'd need to pull over, open the cap, shove an outboard hose with one end cut off down the filler neck, hit the primer bulb a few times, and come back in 15 minutes to an almost full tank.

I did this on my truck ('09) for towing purposes (15 gal). Just a few things to remember if you are connecting to the main tank like I did, the filler hose (rubber hose) size is 1". Its the cheapest to replace if you need to go back ($20 from dealer). I couldn't find any concrete info online until I took it appart and measured. Its a little tight to access the rubber hose, but its doable without having to lower the tank. I put a 1'' to 3/8" T on there and connected it to they external tank with a one way valve in between. It was gravity fed and showed full until the external tank ran dry. Then it was back to normal operation. As long as you have a tight seal all around, the computer won't even know the external tank is there. I found this to be the easiest setup so I didn't have to wire a pump or anything else. You can also put a quick disconnect for easy removal of the tank when not it use. The biggest expense was the tank. You also have to remember to ground the tank to proper ground to avoid static build up when filling up. Hard to do, but not impossible, if you have a plastic tank on a composite bed. I have pictures of my set up if you want to see them let me know.

I don't plan on doing this but would like to see your setup. Sounds like you have it figured out.

I don't have pictures of the final product, but here are some of the set up.

I grounded the metal tank to the frame. (Not shown in the picture)

    Filler Hose Installed

I have since taken it off since I need to sell the truck. It worked great for the time I had it installed. I towed my trailer to San Diego from Phoenix twice and it made it more convenient to just fill up ones on the way each way instead of having to stop and fill up every 100-120 miles.

That's pretty slick. So if gravity fed the auxiliary tank has to be vented. When it ran dry didn't the vent cause any problems in your main tank? I know you said it didn't but just wondering how it wouldn't.

Well lets see I know when my Tacoma is almost completely empty I have squeezed 18 shacking the truck. And you might ask how i know I was on empty ? When I went around the corner fast it would stall out.

The external tank has a vented cap. No need for me to worry about it. It only vents when needed and stays sealed (not completely, but enough not to leak) when not.

Ok, resurrecting this from the dead .... chick2000 I think I'm about to do the same thing you did, I'd like to extend my 21gal tank range beyond 250mi. I see in your pics you have 2 valves, one red handle and the other blue, you said one is a one-way valve. What does the blue one do and what is the yellow bracket looking thing on the fuel line below the truck bed (is that the one-way valve)? If you happen to have any part numbers or recommended places to buy, that would be helpful too. THANKS, this thread seems to be the cheapest solution to my limited 'range' problem. - update - so If I understand the dimensions, 1in is the inside diameter of the filler neck and you have 3/8's (inside hose dimension) feeding from the tank to the neck. For anyone else looking for other picks on a similar solution check colin17's build thread here (239 or so). http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-builds/163804-colinb17s-kinda-sorta-build-thread-239.html
