Rear Seat Delete Decks

I don’t typically keep vehicles long enough to do that and not take a hit on trade in…

but I also have a TON of over full shelving throughout my house…

 

I think I only asked for $80 for the whole setup, both seats top and bottom

 

I finally got around to building mine. I wanted a secure place to put long guns that is out of sight. I live in an urban area, so I go out to the forest for target shooting. There are a bunch of great hiking spots along the way. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for smash and grabs to occur at trailheads since thieves know you'll be gone for a while, and there aren't really people in the parking area for most of the day. I can fit a couple of long guns in there and lock them up.

I used six inch L brackets as the legs to elevate the storage compartment to the height of the drive shaft hump in the middle to provide a flat surface which is the perfect height for a level lid going over the top of the storage compartments that Toyota built into the SR.

The seats still have enough space to move all the way back and fully recline.

I'm happy with it. I just wish I could have found an exact match for the carpet. Oh, well. Close enough.

some of this stuff and installed it last night. Unfortunately, there's just slightly not enough in one package to complete the job, but it works very well over the soundproofing mat. Went from being "yes, contrary to what I originally thought, this is way too damn loud" to "this is super quiet." Only thing I need to do is figure out why, when my vent fan is on (but the AC is off), there's a whistling coming through that vent. Guessing that it's something to do with the geometry of the gaps I left between it and the soft foam, so I'll have to play around with that. For appearance, I'm thinking that I'll install a single layer of black fabric over it before reinstalling the panel.

 

I have what looks like a very similar panel. I used carpet squares that were mildly overlapped in the middle, and only fastened at the bolt points from the panel. Has done a pretty good job at letting air float through for the vents and still reducing sound. They were just the cheap 24" squares from the hardware store. Just the cheap ones. I picked out dark squares and they have done a really good job at disappearing back there, with both the added benefit of further reducing noise, as well as being flexible enough that I can push straps past them when using the panel.

 

In the works few modifications and the carpet left….

Here’s my humble contribution. I have a 4 year old so deleting the whole thing wasn’t an option, and I like him sitting behind the passenger seat so I can hand him stuff and see him better.

anyways, the project cost me $130-ish all in. I went to Home Depot to buy a sheet of half inch ply, and they had a 3/4” sheet of Baltic birch with a smashed corner.. instant 75% off. I used herculiner from autozone, and the latch from Amazon. The rest I did with a combo of table saw, router table, palm router, counter sink bits, and titebond 3. I only took one picture of the progress (it was FREEZING here this past week)

::ETA:: the finish on the bed liner looks a lot better in person, I need to blow it off with some compressed air, the variation in color is sawdust.

 

I cant tell if the sawdust is because you do a lot of wood working or you routed some of that in place. Either way, looks good man.

 

I didn't install latches originally, as I'm waiting for my climate change (moving across the country) to make sure I don't have humidity swelling issues. That said, I like how those look, do you have the name or the link so I can find them on Amazon?

Which cubby-hole is for bringing the mother-in-law home from the airport?

 

anyone have any ideas for a semi-quick release bolt? specifically to bolt through the oem hinge, or to bolt to the hinge mounting point?

i want to have a setup that i can easily change between the oem seat bottoms and a flat cargo/dog platform. been trying to come up with something the last 2 years, and nothing's jumped off hardware store shelves yet like it normally does.

but neither of them are extremely heavy duty to support a seat, i've read a few reports of the nylon in the quick releases softening up and not latching as great when used as hood catches where the hood is stressed from wind buffeting
