So I'm posting this about 3 days before my truck is going in to get fixed (hopefully), just curious if anyone else here has had something similar to this issue. Truck just tipped over 100k miles this last week, but in the last 9k I have been getting an intermittent (but persistent in the sense that it keeps coming back) check engine light. The light is not flashing, so apparently is not anything "serious", but it DOES disable my cruise control and the fix to that is momentarily popping the negative battery terminal clamp off to reset the computer. The error message indicates that there is an ignition system fault that needs to be looked at. First time it happened I was able to get it in the dealership the next day, and when they hooked up their code reader it indicated the #5 coil/cylinder was the problem child. That technician swapped the coils from the #3 & #5 and told me to keep an eye on it and bring it back if it presents itself again. Well, it did a couple of weeks later so instead of taking it back I replaced all the spark plugs (needed done anyway) AND replaced the coil that was originally on the #5 cylinder (now on the #3) with a new Denso coil. Fingers crossed that would fix it only to have my hopes dashed a few days later. The interesting thing about this issue is that the 6-7 times it has done this has ONLY been when the engine has been idling, such as when stopped at a stoplight or a drive-thru window. It has never happened while "driving", only when idling, and when it does I don't hear or feel anything like a misfire, etc. So, the only other idea I have is maybe taking the coil I removed (guessing it is still good) and replacing the coil on the #5 with it, but I ultimately decided to quit playing mechanic and just take it in, maybe the extended warranty I bought with the truck will kick in and defray whatever this is going to cost. Sorry to be so long-winded, but does anyone have any constructive and/or well-thought-out advice? Thanks in advance!
