I just saw that Akio Toyoda has is stepping down on April 1st. He is letting Koji Sato take charge of the company. Toyoda is more old fashioned and very slow to adopt the max producing of electric cars because we simply are not ready for them! He says we don’t have the raw materials or the infrastructure to support such ambitious goals which is completely correct! Not to mention that battery technology is horrible currently and you’d need to spend upwards of $15k to buy a new battery every few years! Thanks to Akio Toyoda, toyota is said to be keeping internal combustion engines as they are very proven and reliable! However, now with new leadership, they are wanting to produce more EVs and progress away from ICE! Can y’all believe this? This could run the great company of Toyota straight into the ground. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a42673244/toyota-ceo-akio-toyoda-steps-down/

    what do y’all think?

I don't think I will be getting an EV any time soon. Not just for those reasons.

    What do I think?

I think the science is pretty much settled that we need to move away from fossil fuels as quickly as possible

EVs, batteries and charging stations are just one part of the changes that need to be made

He may be referencing the earlier hybrid cars, such as the Civic and Prius of the early 2000's - when I was writing service, it was pretty common to have to quote a customer battery replacement due to the IMA battery failing for whatever reason; although it seemed most customers were getting more like 7-8 years out of them if my memory serves correct. On the other side of that coin, we serviced plenty that never required any attention whatsoever, so there's that too. lol

    Yeah.
With so much legislation pushing for more EVs (right or wrong) and limiting ICEs, any big car maker would be limiting their sales by not offering EVs. I feel that some of the goals are aspirational, though, and the infrastructure won't move fast enough to support those goals. We shall see, I guess.

Taking longer trips is a huge issue. What would be nice is if batteries were standardized and swappable, and you just swap your discharged battery for a charged one and carry on your way. Just pay a lease fee or something, and if you have a bad one you just swap for a good one.

I'm waiting for nucular-powered cars. Lifetime range.

    Ugh. :facepalm::facepalm:

Of all the arguments to make against EVs, reliability is not the hill you want to die on. Its a brushless motor and a battery instead of six pistons, a bunch of gears, a shitload of valves and gaskets, and various pools of lubricating and heat transfer systems.

I'm not even an EV guy, but c'mon.

Really like my truck but there are a shit load of Toyota prius cabs in New York that have been going for years, it’s not a new battery every few years
I don’t think the mining for batteries is green in any way.

I'd say the culture is still entrenched at Toyota despite Mr. Toyoda stepping down. Much like Steve Jobs passing and Tim Cook taking the reigns at Apple. So I would say steady as she goes.

Removed some stuff, added some stuff.
Let’s ignore the fact that the carbon foot print and the mining of the raw materials needed to produce these vehicles is going to do more harm to our planet than continuing research into cleaning up ICEs and the fact that you still need fossil fuels to obtain and produce everything.

Let’s also look at a cute little thing called “thermal run away” where the batteries super heat and NOTHING will put them out, and in some cases they even become explosive. There’s a reason why in New York you can’t have your electric scooters charge inside your apartment, here in AZ Glendale is doing the same. Even going as far as to ban EVs from being stored under covered parking/garages due to the hazards. I was recently on a fire that was caused by the charging unit faulting in a brand new home, solar panels burnt it up and now the home owner needs a new home. Luckily no one was there but in NY and Glendale others haven’t been so lucky.

EVs are not the answer. ICE passenger vehicles are not the problem. A commercial air liner produces thousands more tones of carbon at take off than a standard passenger car will in 20 years. (Fact check me on that I could be off) this push for EVs is only happening because lots of people in power invested loads of money into it and want a good ROI, you’re fooling yourself if you think it’s about saving the Earth.

Porsche has the right idea. Look into what they are doing and researching on recycling hydrocarbons. That’s a more affordable and much lower impact answer than mass producing EVs.

Ill pass on EVs. Im 63 and am going to see if my cars will out last me. My 13 Sienna has 71K, My 17 Tacoma has 31K and my 22 CX5 has 800 miles. Any of these should hit 200K. The Taco and CX5 are 4 bangers.

Ahh yes saving the world with electric vehicles what a marvelous plan, especially when 74% of the Cobalt for the batteries comes from child and slave labor. [IMG]

Yup. Buy an EV if you want one. The performance is nuts, but don't try to tell me you're saving the planet.
