It is the best front recovery point.

 

There’s a photo of the reverse gear and pinion somewhere here and it looks like it came from a mini or a big, it is very small.

 

I've always used them the same way and I like the green pin brand so I know they are quality. That said I'm not worried so much about them breaking, it's what they may be attached to...

it is far, far better to have a fear and respect for that which you know you don't know than a "hold mah beer!" attitude.

it's a much better starting point to build the knowledge to do recoveries correctly, or at the very least, know where to admit defeat and allow someone (preferably licensed/insured) to fix it!

I carry both kinetic and straight straps. Any recovery I approach with utmost caution. In my Pro-Rally days, we pulled a vehicle with a trailer hitch and had one of those 1 in a million ball falls. Lots of mistakes, but thankfully the ball missed the driver's head as it went through the windshield. Yikes. That happened in 1978 and still gives me shivers 45 years later.

I do have an ARB recovery point I need to add before my next outing. It's only to be used for getting my sorry but out of there.

^Only downside to the Factor55 hitch adapter is it's aluminum, so it'll get pulverized on rocks if you keep it in the hitch.

Use a kinetic rope instead of recovery strap. More stretch and lighter. e.g.

Backing it off a 1/4 turn is just to prevent the shackle pin from seizing up during the pull. Otherwise you'd need pliers to loosen the pin afterwards.

 

I would not trust a $50 Amazon kinetic rope

Keep in mind all your recovery gear will get abused and dragged through mud. So it's better to get the inexpensive ropes and replace them every few years as needed.

 

I wash my ropes after every use. Fill a 5 gallon bucket with dish soap and water. Soak the rope and let it dry in the driveway or garage. Then back in their carry bags. Look as good as new.

That rope is only rated at 11,000 pounds too. The better ones are over 30,000 for the same size. Guaranteed you are going over 10,000 lbs when loading up that rope. Thanks but I’ll stick with the better ones when it comes to recovery and safety.

7/8" Yankum rope has only WLL of 9000 lbs. You're thinking breaking strength. https://yankum.com/collections/kinetic-recovery-ropes/products/python-kinetic-recovery-rope The GRIP rope has breaking strength of 22,000 lbs.

With the weight of our trucks, you'd have to be buried to the top of your tires for the pull to exceed 10,000 lbs.

 

I have this kit I bring with me, plus some various extra shackles/D-rings. I'm not a huge fan of snatch straps, as others have mentioned, but I do like the hitch mounted D-ring receiver

I've heard this recommendation before and I'm not sure I understand it. Having worked around professional riggers I have noticed they always tighten a shackle fully prior to the load being put on it.
Even when the load was no where near the rated capacity of the shackle, they tighten it out of habit. Granted this was for crane lifts or moving equipment across concrete floors and not a recovery operation with the potential for kinetic forces.
