Maybe for Toyota's it's normal but it's never been normal for any other cars /trucks.
Coolant should not leak or even seep a little drop.

I havent really noticed my coolant level real low. But I was curious and tried to see if I can spy anything on this rear coolant joint part. Best photo I could get from above. It started to rain so I’ll have to investigate further once the weather clears up.

2017 with 84k miles on it. As far as replacement goes, is this a part we are going to have to replace ever so often?

Doesn't seem to affect many 2018+ Tacoma's and there's a superceded part number. Sounds like they may have updated something? Idk though, just my 2 cents.

If this location is above the back of the transmission at the back of the engine it looks like the dreaded coolant crossover pipe leak. This mainly affected 2016 & 17's. I do believe there were a few other model years as well. One being as recent as 2020. It was inconclusive if Toyota issued a revised or improved crossover pipe from what I understand. Check out this video at the 14:20 mark and this Video at the 3:55 mark for more details.

2017 Tacoma here with 86k. It appears my water pump is leaking ever so slightly (small pool of dried up pink residue in the bottom, center of engine block). I’ve been keeping an eye on the coolant level and it’s been very slight and gradual loss over 1 year. I started at full and it down about 1 inch. My mechanic recommended I change it out at 90k. Do I need to do this right now? How long can a slightly leaking water pump last?

    not enough.
I actually replaced mine on my own fairly easily. just lost a lot of coolant in the process and had to refill. should last long enough. the gasket is probably all that's gone bad.

in regards to the coolant leak in the back of the engine (crossover), check out the Youtube link below. Calls himself 'The Car Care Nut'
and is pretty knowledgeable. He discussed the crossover pipe issue about 14 mins into the video.

I also have a 2017 Tacoma that has developed this leak with only 10k mikes on it. There's a dried up puddle on my garage floor that I noticed when starting to change my oil. My truck is obviously out of warranty now. The level is down a bit in my reservoir but nothing that attracted my attention until I saw the dried up puddle. After selling my 1989 4x4 V6 pickup with 287k miles and no problems except the occasional water pump I'm surprised that for such a critical part and the labor involved that Toyota would switch to plastic over the Lexus metal crossover. This is my first posting and I appreciate all of you guys making me feel like I'm not the Lone Ranger with my truck that has so few miles on it. BTW, great video. Thanks for posting it. We've been a Toyota family since '89 including Camrys, Corollas, and trucks. This the first issue I've had, out of the ordinary, with any of my Toyotas under 200k miles and all have gone well beyond 200k miles. I love this truck but I'm obviously going to have to keep a closer eye on it. Does anyone know if the Lexus metal crossover is a direct replacement? Thanks all.

    Stratocat,
I'm afraid I don't know about the Lexus part, but I would suggest having a look under the truck above the transmission to be sure.

It is not. It needs other parts and fabrication to "work" yet no one has done it.

Thanks. Too bad. It would seem to be a permanent fix. I don't want to have to replace the crossover again.

I had the rear bypass leak at 132, yes, 132 miles on brand new 2022. Noticed coolant dripping off the transmission bell housing a week or two after picking it up off the lot. Obviously fixed under warranty, but weird to say the least especially 132 miles. There is a TSB on this now. TSB 0083-22 check your while under warranty https://www.tsbsearch.com/Toyota/T-SB-0083-226AA09C22-A7AF-4F94-9C9B-1969A018C4CE.jpg

This appears to be a different issue, as it's limited to 2022 models, and all they are doing is attempting to realign parts to get the
o-rings to seal, not replacing any parts. I believe the culprit in most other cases is a cracked bypass valve, and there is no TSB or recall for that issue.

I'm glad that this is a much easier thing to check though. Beats pulling the engine, or dropping the transmission.

I was changing the oil after a 5200+ mile road trip across the western states and found the coolant bottle was low. Radiator still full.
I topped the bottle off and it is the first time I've ever added coolant since I got the truck off the dealer delivery truck in July of 2021.
Likelihood that pipe is the culprit?

Or could this be evaporative loss?

I'm searching for my USB borescope camera to take a peek and hope for the best.
