Had 9 fuel pump replacements since I've been at this shop. 8 of them had Costco gas. One of them got a new engine out of it. 30% gas, 70% other/water/solubles

Maybe it's just the local Costco has a leak in their tank, but you're not going to convince me that it's worth it. Lol (and no one cares about my opinion, so no hurt feelings either)

 

Having stopped at a lot of superchargers I'm of the opinion that if the shop is offering something to purchase the deal is even. I can choose to buy or not, just like when I'm driving my truck. I've stopped countless times at places with public facilities and only used the restroom.

 

Restroom stop, I feel guilty. The more people the more I buy. Just me, I always buy gas, coffee or a soda.

 

All gasoline has a minimum requirement of additives/detergents. Some stations may add more at the pump. That said, I’m getting the cheapest I can find

 

Doubt it. Those are generally added at the terminals, I believe.

Say Costco gasoline is actually produced by Exxon. It will be the same gasoline but the stuff at the branded Exxon/Mobil/Esso stations will get their special additive package and Costco will just get the minimum legislated requirement.

 

It's all the same gas, until the individual company adds their particular detergent. For the most part, there is no meaningful difference. Want to pay more? Go ahead, but it isn't any better.

For a few cents extra, I'll stick to the top tier whenever I can. Probably a special case, but years ago I had a car with a tune. Any time I got gas at a no name station, the CEL came on. Fill up at a top tier station, CEL off.

And of course there's a website who did a study and they find in favor of top tier, but different testing methods used.

Use whatever works for you. I find gas prices vary more by location rather than brand.

The extra additives/detergents are not done at the refinery. All vendors are filled at the same refinery dispenser so they all get the same blend. If a vendor adds more it’s done at the pump.

 

Here it's done at the terminal (which isn't generally at the refinery). It might be different there.

 

You don't have to pay more. Top Tier isn't limited to Premium grade or Chevron type stations. Arco sells it. Read the first bullet point below.
