What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Id personally leave it and the rest of the TB alone if it was working right. Theres no performance to be found from cleaning it.

then why do people do it? Lol I would think not having carbon deposits in your throttle body is preferred.

 

People usually clean em when they act up and then discover afterward that their high idle is even higher because they cleaned all the buildup that was keeping their worn out TB from flowing excess air past the butterfly when closed. If it isn't acting up then you run the risk of causing it to need repair by a service like max bore where it will get rebored and have a new properly fitting butterfly installed. Unless you have 1/4" of buildup all around then I promise you'll notice no difference in performance, but you might cause a problem only money and time can fix if you clean it now if it was working right before.

One thing that might help to reduce the crud buildup would be to add an oil catch can between the PVC and the TB. Fairly easy to do and use. You'd be surprised at how much crap it takes out of the intake system.

I did the oil catch can between the PCV and intake manifold a few weeks ago but what is the hose circle in blue for?

 

too late I noticed a visible gap after cleaning that seems it can be easily resolved by adjusting a set screw though. That’s my current plan. It’s the first and only time I cleaned it in 265k miles and probably will be the last time I clean it for another 250k

I thought about it but considering how clean it all seemed to begin with at the current mileage it doesn’t seem necessary compared to the 3rz motors.

Figured out why my elocker wasn’t working. Looks like moisture got inside and corroded everything. I carefully took it apart and cleaned everything and it works again! I made sure to reseal it so hopefully this doesn’t happen again.

 

Nice! Did you go with one of the oring kits or some RTV, looking at the corrosion I probably would have went with some RTV. My transfer case actuator on my Land Cruiser was just as bad, I wish the replacements were such a crazy price

 

I dabbed some FIPG on it before reassembling. If it fails again I will probably just buy a new unit. 2 of the magnets actually let loose from the motor housing so I had to epoxy those back.

 

Oil catch can came in..
is this mesh suppose to sit at the bottom of the can? Or what’s its purpose?

 

It helps with condensation by creating a greater surface area and a way to scrub it clean when you need

Finally got the new paint job polished and waxed with 2 coats of ceramic. Finally back on the road tomorrow!

 

It doesn’t go in the bottom of the can though, there is a little trap in the top of the catch can where the inlet port is, it should unscrew and you can put some of that mesh in there so oil/fuel vapor will condense and drip into the can instead of being sucked right out through the outlet port.

 

Did a bit more to the cross member.

What does a dual stick transfer case do? Is it for lower gearing in 4wd? Probably a stupid question, but have never seen one. My big 4 wheel adventures are only on the sand at the beach, haha.

 

Double low. You're tcase gives you around 2.5:1 ratio in low range.

This will give me
Back transfer case low 2.5:1
Front transfer case low 4.7:1
Front and back transfer case low 12:1
