Probably because Ford are the only ones who make a 550? (Or at least they were when my previous site bought their most recent equipment truck.)

Seriously, I’d say they made a good choice.
What did you expect? A Tundra?

A Tundra wouldn’t handle that Payload.

Maybe because Toyota does not make a chassis that can handle the payload of a fire fighting apparatus. If they made a Tundra that was equivalent to a 550, we wouldn't have so many "can I tow this" threads.......

Well that was answered, so up next, the debate on why Toyota uses Kenworth and Peterbilt for their cross country logistics.

I don't know the current status, but Toyota was working with Hino a few years ago on a new semi.

I have to agree with all of these responses, Toyota does not make a 1ton chassis. Ford seems like the go to for class 3 and 4 commercial chassis, I think they are usually priced below Ram.

Interesting that they went with a diesel for this application, considering up front and maintenance costs. Diesel probably is the better choice here.

Those Skeeter trucks can also be fitted with a lift and much larger tires, that look similar to an Earthroamer build. I'm not sure what components they use to lift the trucks.

The Hilux is a popular platform used by the fire service around the world. Not only as chief and command vehicles, but upfited as mini pumpers. Same as the LC-70.

Any service is going to implement what is geographically available and commonly used.

Last gen Ranger Raptors seemed to become popular among police departments where they were sold.

Well….if they really wanted to keep it all Toyota, they do have the power to import.

I'd be more worried about the people on the fire team. I've met plenty of company fire squads. About half of them wouldn't be capable of rescuing themselves in an emergency. Let's just say that I know one person who takes an entire week to complete his annual 9-11 memorial stair climb.

A few years ago I had a problem with my '09. The local dealer sent a Toyota truck to pick it up. Don't know what the rating was on it, but it was significantly above a Tundra.

No. As I recall, it was a bit bigger. Not a cabover.
