Last may I stopped at a light and my truck would not shift out of Neutral. I was towed home $200.00. truck ran fine up until this incident. truck has 25,000 miles. I bought new and always drove easy. 2 wheel drive. I could not pay to get it fixed. My brother asked me about it and said he would help me if I wanted to do it myself, We replaced the clutch and pressure plate.
    seems good now.DSC01674.jpg DSC01676.jpg

I have never seen a pressure plate that looks like that. I thought the factory spec has all straight fingers instead of curvy shape

    Stock TOB sucks
Probably a good time while you’re in there to at least upgrade it to bigger URD one

25k for a toasted clutch and pressure plate must be some kind of record.

even all the aftermarket ones I can find have straight fingers... is OP in the wrong subforum?

From those pics, I’m with you. Feeling pretty confident that’s not Tacoma pressure plate.

    maybe it is

RockAuto shows LuK as being the only one curved
LuK has a good reputation among German cars, and bad reputation among Tacomas
their cheaper Tacoma flywheel supposedly has interference issues with the starter and machining of the teeth
OEM Aisin flywheel is probably $800
which is what makes buying a used one to resurface for $50 at a machine shop a great option
like the one I had and tossed in the dumpster that no one would even pay 50 bucks for

Exedy and Aisin have a good reputation

    re: stock parts

    or, above that, probably URD

    WINNER!

Sounds like OPs low mileage truck has already gone through a clutch.

I think I'm more impressed that a 17 year old truck only has 25k miles on it

Did these trucks ever come with a LUK clutch from the factory, or did some test driver destroy the clutch before OP bought the truck?

It's not the mileage it's the time

Does the release bearing move freely on the quill? Clutch fork pivot ok?

they did have various TSBs (usually covered within warranty period) that involved replacing crappy problematic parts with new crappy problematic parts rather than performing any update, revision, redesign, etc like other automakers do

I swapped cluch, throwout bearings and flywheel in my 2005 at 160k.

It was all original a nd still functional when i replaced it.

25k is strange. Were you pulling a 10,000lb trailer uphill for 25k ??

My daily driver 2006 (17-year-old) Scion xB still has its original clutch at 136,000 miles. I think a large part of that may be the skills of the guy who drives it. I've seen brand new clutches destroyed in less than a week by folks who don't understand the do's and don'ts of driving a stick.

On this particular vehicle though, I'm leaning towards a failed Throw out - or as Toyota calls them - Release Bearing.

I never towed or abused the transmission. It must be because of time and the Florida heat. The whole thing I found kind of depressing. I mean 25,000 miles must be a record. It's embarrassing.

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
Don’t worry, I had a 2022 corolla with 1500 miles that the kid destroyed the clutch on. No warranty.. he just couldn’t drive stick.. 2000 miles later the new one was slipping. See the car around town time from time and.. well it’s usually stalling at every light. Lol…

What do you mean by wouldn’t shift outta neutral? Was it slipping or was it not going into gear like the TOB wasn’t moving.
