Considering trading my 18 v6 sr5 4x4 for a 23 , I don’t NEED a new truck as mine has very low miles and is in new condition (I have a 4runner as a daily driver, provided by my employer so it only gets used on weekends) anyway the question is , do you like your 21 and newer 3rd gen more than you liked your 16-19 or if it’s about the same. Driveabilty , fit and finish etc.

I had a 17 sold it in 18, I am now in a 2022. Save your money, if there is a difference its not enough to sell a perfectly good vehicle for essentially the same thing.

I had a 2016, and now 2022. I am really enjoying all the new updates.

Traded my 19 TRD sport for a 21 Limited. Nicer cosmetics and interior & calmer transmission but that's it.

there is no way i would part with a low mileage vehicle that i know the history of and it meets my needs, for the same vehicle only newer. that's just a poor decision imo.

on the other hand, if the vehicle wasn't meeting a need say because of a growing family or you needed to tow more weight, than i could see upgrading.

    keep the '18.

I had a 2018 OR DCLB that was rear-ended and totaled with 30,000 miles on it. I've had my 2022 OR DCLB for almost a year, it has 10,100 miles on it. The biggest difference is in the automatic transmission. Even after the 2018 truck "learned" my driving habits it would still hang on to lower gears too long. I have no complaints with the newer truck's transmission, the shifting is better and it happily cruises along at 75 mph at around 2,000 rpm, slightly lower rpms than the 2018 did.The interior is quieter when riding along, and the LED headlights are much nicer.

Thanks for the responses , I love my truck , shifts a little funky but I’ve gotten used to it , I am a little concerned about some of the 18s having a burned valve situation but I know that’s rare and probably won’t happen , I know this is the last year of the v6 and just want to have one I can keep for a long time because I’m retiring in a couple years .

I traded an 18 OR for a 20 OR. The 18 had gear hunting issues that I couldn't live with. Went from Metallic Black to Quicksand. The 20 runs perfectly and I love the color. Win, win ...!!

I had both a 2016 TRDOR and a 2021 TRDOR at the same time, owning both simultaneously for roughly 12 months. I'd routinely drive both in a single day.

I personally liked the switch, as I bought the 2016 used with 40k miles, and got the 2021 brand new with basically no miles. The 2021 also had the tech package and the mandatory TSS-P, which added features that I personally enjoy.

Other than that, they were/are the same truck. They drive the same, the interior is the same quality, etc.

Yup. If you were going from 2wd to 4wd, or 4 to 6 cyl or a different cab/bed size maybe it’d be worth. But I wouldn’t buy the same truck, same trim unless there was a big enough refresh. Like from an 04 to 05 or a 2011 to 2012, or a 2015-2016. I haven’t driven them but I personally don’t see enough of a difference between the different third gens to sell. Especially with these interest rates. I’d rather a new motorcycle or ATV

Traded a 2018 TRDOR Access cab manual for the exact same 2022. Besides the TRD lift and exhaust on the new one, modded the same.

Best changes are the nicer radio (once you change to the RAV4 knobs) and navigation, the power driver’s seat and the two-tone seat fabric. I also prefer the body-coloured (black) rear bumper caps to the “chrome” ones on the older model.

Not directly related to the model year, but my wife says the ride on the new one (with the TRD lift) is nicer than the old one. She has a far more sensitive behind than me, so I will take her word for it.

Edit: not counting the “accessories” on the new one, cost $2500 (Canadian) to subtract 4 years and 65,000 km from what I had. Seemed like a good deal.

2018 ---> 2021. Nearly identical trade (trim, color, drivetrain, etc) with exception of gaining the prem. package and LED headlights.

    Big differences:

    1. A/T shifting / engine tuning better in 2021.
    2. Infotainment better in 2021.
    3. Engine coolant crossover pipe leak not an issue in 2021 (suspected leak in 2018).
    4. Smoother/quieter ride in 2021 (thicker side window glass).
    5. 2021 Factory tire tread seems to be lasting 15k+ miles more than 2018.
    6. Nicer appearance for 2021 (grille, tail lights mostly).

I traded a 2019 TRD Off Road DCSB for a 2022 TRD Off Road DCSB. Same color & options on both.
The big difference for me was that the 22 has remote start which is nice in the winter.
Both trucks were purchased new. The 19 had 54k miles on it when I traded it.
It cost me $5k to basically hit the reset button and get back into a new truck with a new warranty.
While a financial adviser may not agree, I thought the $ 5k was money well spent.

    I traded my 2017 SR5 for a 2020 TRD OR.
The fixes to the 2020+ transmission are noticeable. It doesn't prematurely shift up to 6th like the 2017 did. It also doesn't lug like the 2017 did, and cruise control on the highway is much better. There were also a few 'nice to have' upgrades depending on which trim level you get.
I got an insane deal on the 2020, a $1000 rebate, and top dollar for my 2017. I also upgraded from an SR5 to TRD OR. So I bit.
Right now, I don't think the same deals are out there. I'd probably wait for a 4th gen.

Oh wow I didn’t know about the side window glass feature! I wish that was a standalone option on all vehicles. I don’t need too many gadgets but would gladly pay an extra couple hundred for thicker glass

Waste of money IMO. Negligible difference in quality, probably less in the newer ones being made in Mexico vs Mercia.

Normally, this doesn't matter, but my 21 was made in Texas. Don't know if they did or didn't swap, but either way the plant it was manufactured in doesn't make any sort of difference.

Maybe it does maybe it doesn’t. Idk. Makes me feel a little better knowing my fellow Americans built it.
