A post like this makes me wonder why I would ever want to buy a used vehicle.

Pardon me sir, I should have realized you were an attorney

It seems there’s a greater shortage of common sense than good/skilled labor now a days, and I guess you can’t fix stupid after all.

The time that it takes to avoid a lengthy litigation resolving a preventable catastrophe is insignificant, in comparison to the time that it takes to avoid one.

    But you do you lol!

Half the threads I read on TW have convinced me that I would rather buy a used mattress off of CL than a used truck from the dealer's lot.

Relax A-tech. Not everyone has the means to do their own oil change.

You guys do you. I don't have any problem with people who check their oil 10x per day. Just like I don't have a problem with my neighbor who mows his grass daily in the summer. Do what makes you happy.

If you want to spend time making sure you're Tacoma doesn't spontaneously combust, that's fine. I have more faith in the product, it's why I bought a Toyota, so I generally don't worry about these things.

So doing your own oil change is a sign of maturity? Whatever helps you sleep at night, I guess. To me it's a basic maintenance procedure that I'm happy to let the dealership tackle, since their price is on par with what it costs to DIY and the time it takes to dispose of the old oil. If they fuck it up, it's on them. If I fuck it up, it's on me.

I've changed my own oil on my vehicles for the last 15 years, and you know what? It's a PITA. People on this forum act like their Tacoma is made from solid gold and that it must be safeguarded at all costs from the evil dealership. My truck isn't special in any way, if the dealer breaks something, they fix it. Not going to lose sleep over it.

For the 50 bucks it cost, it's not worth my time to deal with the old oil and crawling on my back in 20-degree weather. Plus, I live in a condo and have a steep driveway.
I'll gladly pay a few bucks to for convenience's sake. Plus, my dealer sends me an inspection video of the underneath of my truck and lets me know about any potential issues.

You sound like a reasonable person, and everyone has their own reasons for their actions (or non-actions). What one may think is totally unreasonable, another may think is perfectly reasonable, common sense even.
While I disagree with your own procedure, I do agree with "you do you".
    Good luck

    Yeah.
Some people just aren't mechanically inclined and would never notice this. In fact, MOST people likely don't do their own maintenance, nor do they check their oil at every fill up. I'd bet that more than half of the drivers out there don't even know how to check their oil and wouldn't notice anything wrong. I certainly don't check mine every time I fill up. I'm in the DIY camp, but pretty sure we are in the minority - and some people are just better off letting someone else do it.

If I were the OP, I'd do like some have suggested. Courteously work with the dealer to try and reach a resolution that you are comfortable with.

Why would you open the hood on a new truck after an oil change? Make sure the engine is still there? What are you looking at? I did not open the hood on mine after the first 5,000 check, and yes I paid for them to change the oil then.

It's been months since I've opened the hood on any of my cars.

With so many stories of people receiving less than perfect vehicle care it makes me think of offering to perform lube services for TW members as I travel around the country sight seeing. I’ll stock my truck with engine oil, filters, transmission and differential fluid and all the necessary tools and meet all of you cool folk. Now I call tha t a GREAT retirement plan.
