A coworker from Singapore was with me for a customer visit in Thief River Falls. The flight was canceled, so we had to drive to Grand Forks, ND, to catch a flight (60 miles).

He said, "no problem, let me type in the address, and off we went." He lost it, the first time in his life he had been outside of cell range. He didn't know you could download maps to a phone. No cell coverage, and convinced we would be lost. Hint, turn right and drive an hour. Take a left at the T, right next to T, and there is the airport. I didn't tell him I looked earlier but said we had to keep the sun at our backs. I have an odd sense of humor.

He had never been outside of cell coverage, so that was a first for him.

Ya, on road trips, I still like my big ol' Atlas.

The large road atlas is trustworthy. You can go coast to coast without ever touching a freeway… except in California. I used to map out a day’s route the night before at that night’s motel, calling ahead to reserve the next night’s motel. My fellow club members would caravan, but Juanita and I enjoyed solo.

A little something every chance we get.
:pccoffee: Good Morning Porch Pals and Sue! A little "iffy" morning to get us to a partly cloudy 78* today. Here, you'd never know that an ice storm started a week ago. Got some simple projects for the day, and see about insurance quotes. GEICO raised us up $14 a month - again. Clean, senior, don't even get 5K a year in miles. We'll see.

Great Race is a lot of "fun". I used to work at a place where the owner always had a car from his vast collection running in the race. I can't remember exactly what we did, but it was sneaky, and had everything to do with "calibrating" his speedometer. He's since passed on, the car collection was sold, and his museum closed. He probably had 500 or so cars and trucks. Dick Burdick, founder of Thermon.

LOL - where is my Atlas. I still throw it in the vehicle on long trips. One thing it's very handy for is locating those county names they give you on storm alerts. You can do it on a phone nowadays, but it's easier to visualize with a map. Yeah, old atlas is covered with highlighter colors of trips too.

I still keep a bunch of maps in all my vehicles as back up even though I use gps almost 100% of the time. Even have marine maps aboard my boat. Our generation is actually able to read and follow maps unlike younger generations who look at maps as something from the Stone Age. I also still carry topo maps and compass when in the mountains/wilderness (and I can actually find my way and know how to use a compass). And on road trips my wife is a better navigator than me. We 60+ know stuff.

    Afternoon all:
Speaking of maps, we always bought a Maine Atlas and Gazetteer when we hunted Maine. Every logging road was shown in them which didn't show up on anything else, they are available for other states also, best maps I ever used.

Showed a lot of old "Jeep Roads" that didn't show up anywhere else.

I noticed that my remote tailgate lock wasn't working - not sure it ever worked at all at this point. So, I took my truck into the dealership this morning - turned out either the actuator was improperly installed 3 years ago or a nut came loose at some point causing the lock to fail to engage. After a bit of discussion they agreed that, since it was dealer installed as part of the original purchase, it was covered under the 36 month/36k mile Toyota Warranty. As it turned out, today was the exact date of my 36 month purchase anniversary!:thumbsup: They put in the new actuator and it works like a champ. Score!!

I would buy a new Atlas for every cross country trip. Back home again, it would be full of felt pen highlights, motel notes, hamburger stains, and spindled corners. Only let me down once, a Utah State Highway was unpaved and full of boulders. It actually did go through, got me where I was going, but I wasn't quite prepared for that adventure! I had discovered highway 92 several years previous, a fabulous little road, so from there I picked up 224 going north to Park City. Dunno what it's like these days, but it was an adventure back then!

The first topo's we had for Jackman Maine were from Canada, they were so old that they showed some logging roads that weren't even there anymore, the terrain didn't change though, which was what we were mainly interested in, and we used compasses to shoot courses in and out of the areas we hunted. We eventually switched to handheld GPS's and absolutely love them, ALWAYS had extra batteries and a ball compass to glance at just in case, plus an extra compass in the pack, I DID NOT want to spend a night in the North Maine Woods.

Good morning. All this talk about maps brought up memories. When I worked for C&P Telephone, I had all the map books of the DC area. I also carried a local fold out map, that I could always find for free. You would be surprised at the number of tourists that would ask me how to get to a place in DC or the surrounding area. When stopped I would pull out the free map and mark where they currently were at and how to get to the destination. Then I would give them the map. It would always make the tourists day. One sad relic of the past: you could always receive a free Maryland map at a toll both. We have no more manned toll booths so no more maps. Sad really.

Off to the tax preparers office this morning after I hit the gym.

    Morning all:

Just dropped mine off on Sun., it's that time of the year again!

Just got off the phone with my hunting buddy, he said he now has a lot of pain in his back between his shoulder blades, so now he has pain in both his lower and his upper back, I think we're both getting near the end of our hunting days!
The reason I had called him was because I had found something he had mentioned, a hunting stool with a swivel seat, after I told him the price and the weight it, he said it was too expensive and probably weighed 3-4 times more than the ones that we have, and also mentioned that he may not be hunting that long anymore.
He's on disability, so moneys tight, I could buy it and "lend" it to him to use or just give it to him, I don't know if either one of us wants to shoulder a 10.5 lb. stool just because it swivels, we already have enough "stuff" that we carry!

    Welcome KODA! Cute pup!

:pccoffee: Good Afternoon, Indeed, Porch Pals & Sue! One less specialist to visit regularly! I am released from my Endo Dr. (She's not retiring - new clinic) My numbers have been so good for several years now, that she says there is no reason to follow up anymore. I can have the labs she requests done for my Primary, and do the test strips for a month when I see her on regular visits. If the numbers aren't what my Primary Doc likes, then I will track the specialist down at her new place. I'm happy about one less specialist for sure!

On the way home, I saw this monster. No, I have no idea....

And, this is for you @Travlr ! Ain't CRS grand? I can remember things like this, but not stuff that I wanted to look up 5 minutes ago.

Kurt, I read "seeing my Endo Doctor" and thought, "mobile lab for colonoscopy. Heck of a house call, doctor!

Got enrolled in another clinical study—a six-month drug trial to see if it slows the progression of Parkinson's. Blood work, EKG, and mini-physical is a good things.
    https://clinicaltrials.gov/

Got the dog in for her vet appointment. Teeth look, no extractions needed, wallet $780 liter. Ouch.
Ran into a "Karen" at the vet. We walked in simultaneously and I politely commented, "Hey, you forgot your Handicap Placard." She was with her elementary school ages daughter and the mom cussed me out; the daughter looked appalled. Learned a few new phrases. Sigh. Felt sorry for the kid. As I was leaving she demanded to know why I took a photo of her car. "Parking Mobility App" :)
