tire rotation, why not this way

general tire rotation question. ive done this in the past and keep wondering "why shouldnt i keep doing it.

Im going to use a general 5000 mile rotation schedule. You get new tires, after 5000 miles you rotate. great.
Why not wait 10,000 for your next rotation? it keeps the miles run in between front and backs the same, just going from 5000 to 0 to 5000

The wear is the same whether they’re turning CW or CCW.

10k is fine, with agressive tires it’s best practice to diagonally cross rotate to reuse the edge feathering but no tire needs to be done every 5k.

    I have access to a hoist and I don’t even do 5k

So, you're only going to rotate every 10K, after the first 5K? Why not just start after 10K at that rate?

Maybe I'm crazy, but I've been making sure to cross mine every time to reverse the direction of rotation. My last few sets of tires have all had excellent wear.

I rotate every 50 miles. Real PITA on long road trips.

My tires always rotate when I'm driving. Maybe I'm doing it wrong though.

Yeah, that's not ideal. They will just wear out doing that.

maybe i didnt explain good enough.
You start with 5000, now there is a 5000 mile diff between the front and rear. If you go another 5, they are even. But, dont rotate just yet. Go another 5, now there is once again a difference of the front and rear of 5000 miles. Now push your interval to 10000 permanently and you will always have a 5000 mile difference worst case, same as doing it 5000, but now you dont have to rotate as often.

FFS. I guess I'll trade this one in for another that doesn't rotate.

I just let Toyota rotate mine at every oil change :)

Only one time they couldn't do it cause none of the mechanics in that day had the tool to remove my rims and I woulda had to dig it out under a pile of camping stuff in the backseat. Once they ruined a couple lugs (cross threaded) and bought me a whole new set, so I now have an extra one of the splined sockets and a bunch of extra lug nuts. I just leave the socket handy now.

No, it is not. And most truck/SUV tires are not directional

This doesn't make any sense. You rotate front to back, there is no difference with the front-to-back itself like you keep saying.

Are you referring to crossing one pair of tires as you perform the rotation? So that you also switch sides and the tire rotates a different direction? If this worries you just switch sides for both, rotation includes front to back and side to side for all tires.

In short it doesn't matter. Rotation is just something that helps balance wear if there is any uneven wear on a single wheel. Drive wheels can also wear on the front side of the lug since they are always slightly bending the lug, hence the L/R switch when you move them forward and you may get an additional 2% of tire life and likely 5% less road noise near the end of tire life.

Since the front and back experience different loads you don't need to keep them "the same".

i do 10k planned, unless I see some wear, or I've done something cool that has torn the tires up a bit... though I have gotten 10k out of a pair of GT qualifiers on a Torino in high school...:burnrubber:

i know the point of rotating but thank you. My only point is rotating every 10k instead of 5, but keeping the mileage difference between all tires no more than 5k.
I didnt think i would have such a hard time explaining this, but i regret everything.

I guess it comes down to what kind of a rotation pattern you do. I actually rotate mine in a way that they all change direction every rotation, so I rotate every 5000 miles while I change the oil.
