What I want to know if it can do:

I want the instrument cluster to be illuminated...
with my "headlight on/off" switch in the Auto position..
while the lights are not on (because it's not dark enough out to make them come on).

    =-=-

    How it currently works:

The way it works currently is that when my headlight on/off switch is in Auto, if the headlights are not on (ambient light isn't low enough) - the instrument cluster is also not illuminated.

As soon as the headlights do come on at dusk, the instrument cluster does currently illuminate.

New owner here as well and found the gauge cluster to be a bit too dim during the day. Thought I was missing a setting.

The analog gauges are not backlit with lights off.

The center screen can be adjusted for brightness (with lights off) using the same dimmer control for the illuminated dash (when lights are on).

To backlight the instrument panel, as was said in the other thread, turn your headlights on. Or crack into the dash and rewire the illumination circuit.

This has been a complaint by many. No pnp fixes yet other than running with your lights on 24/7.

    Got it, thanks.

I guess since you can display your speed in the center part it's not a huge deal anyway. I just thought maybe I was missing something, or turned something off by twisting that little stick that adjusts the brightness.

Dumped the Tacoma, that's all it needed.
Two easy solutions here. One is free, one is very close to free.

turn your headlights on and leave them on. When you lock your truck they will shut off, and on my 2023 there isn’t a headlight on beep.

the other option it to use something to semi permanently cover the sensor on the dash, but this may also put your radio into “night display” mode which may or may not be understandable.

Wonder where the auto headlight sensor is?
A piece of black electrical tape could solve this dilemma

I could definitely "force" them to come on - or just turn the knob to on...but I actually do really like the look of the LED part just being on by itself (I guess these are the DRL's). It makes me feel cool or something knowing they're on. Maybe that will wear off eventually.

Why not just turn it one more click to DRL? Dash lights and drls are on, headlights are not…

No. The question has nothing to do with light sensitivity or forcing headlights to come on or lowering their sensitivity.

The question had to do with leaving the selector in the Auto position and having the instrument cluster illuminate, despite the Auto headlights being off due to higher ambient lighting than would typically cause the headlights to illuminate in that position.

I too like to have the dash illuminated. My work around is to leave the switch in the clearance lights(?) setting. Upside is it is regularly dusty on the roads for work, so having taillights on for safety...

This would be parking lights on and I highly doubt you would get pulled over, but technically illegal in most places I think.

During daylight hours, I like to run with driving lights on and Fog lights on for visibility (one click past Auto on the outer stalk and inner stalk with Fogs on). Give it a try and see if you like it. This if your stalk looks like this picture.

Yeah that's the same as mine. I'll have to try it tomorrow. Thanks.

If you like the way this looks to on coming traffic, the bonus is it will light up your speedometer and tach during the day.

Good luck with that. You need a minimum markers lights ON to achieve this. It is all tight to Illumination system. Your options are to fool the dash sensor, turn lights on or adjust sensor sensitivity.
