Can you paint over wallpaper? My in-laws had a contractor come by for an estimate and they said they wouldn’t remove the wallpaper, paint it with Kilz, then paint. That doesn’t seem right to me. I know removing wallpaper can damage sheetrock, but couldn’t it be patched/repaired fairly easily?

I did it years ago, it looked ...ok... kind of like I had painted over 35 year old wall paper.
I just painted it with cheap paint, no primer.
A real painter might get better results.

@Delta09 might know, he is the paint pro.

wallpaper is a major pain to remove. if it damages the drywall beneath, they need to skim-coat and sand the entire wall. very labor intensive.

but painting over it will never fix the edges from pulling up...

So we bought our house about 10 years ago and discovered that the previous owner painted over the wallpaper. Even textured over it in several places. It peeled…worse is once it peeled I was left with the stupid glue that was left behind. Hours of prep work to get it fixed right. Around windows, doors, and humid locations were the worst. Just be aware of the risks. For what it’s worth…I painted houses professionally for years, but this was one of the worst when it comes to prep.

    We have removed wallpaper.

I think tearing the drywall out to the studs, taping and finishing would be quicker and easier. BUT if you do the wall paper removal OK, just patching and skim coating will be best if the drywall is damaged

You can, it is a major PITA though. First, you need to prime it with an oil base primer. Water based may bring up the glue and it will be pretty nasty. That will seal it from the latex paint. Second, you need to caulk around where it meets the baseboard, door/window trim, and ceiling. This will cut down on the peeling back.

Thanks, that’s what I was thinking. I think there might be a lot of wallpaper in their house, and that’s the reason the contractor said paint over it.

Now that our tanks are in and compacted backfill around them we can complete the foundation work around the tanks to rebuild this end of the house we tore off

in the meantime the basement rear side bearing wall has been removed so we can enact repairs to the top of the old foundation wall and re-frame

Knowing nothing about code, or industry norms, is there a general rule of thumb for how far away from the home your septic system should be?
