Just wondering if the problem has actually been fixed or is it still an issue in ‘23? I hit a deer in my 2004 Tacoma and it’s going to be down for a little while and while I thought I wanted a new TRD off-road the more I research the more I’m wanting to just get another 2.7l just to avoid problems because I trust them owing 3 since 2007. Thanks.

Wait until next year and get a new '24 with the new 2.5L Turbo 4 cylinder.

There are some 2022 Tacomas with the timing cover leaking issue. I'd definitely assume 2023 will be the same.

I dislike the 3.5L engine and transmission in the current gen Tacoma. The rest of the truck is pretty great though. A used 2nd gen Tacoma with the 4.0 would be my choice.

    This is good advice.
I would not buy one. But a lot of people probably will; and perhaps the OP would be a willing Test Pilot :plane:

It’s hard to find a second gen in good shape in Wv they are either rusted out or bear hunters have beat them to death in the mountains.

I won’t be the test pilot I don’t like change at all , that’s why I’m still driving a first gen. If I could I’d be driving a late 80s Toyota with no options. Not big into technology , electronics or all the sensors that break or fail in 5-10 years.

I find it funny that the guy with the third year of a new design said not to buy the first 2 years. You have the second year of a new design, and say to not buy the first year of a redesign lol.

I too have the second year of a new deign, and say buy whatever you want. First year has the bugs, by the third year they are decontenting the vehicle anyways to remove what caused the bugs in the first place. And other stuff gets removed for no good reason as well.

Hahaha I knew that was gonna come up :D

But, in all honesty, and not just tacomas - I was always told to wait out the first year of a new design.

I wasn’t a fan of the added tech going into 2018 and newer, so I pulled the trigger on the 17.
I agree with you tho, to each their own. What works for me, may not for another..and visa versa of course lol

Travel to a non rust belt area to buy. Most vehicles last a really long time in mild weather.

I think the 2.5L Turbo 4 cylinder just isn't a good fit for these trucks.
Buy a 2023 while you still can, if the 2.5L Turbo 4 cylinder turns out to be a winner you can always get your money
back out of it. But me things the 2.5L Turbo 4 cylinder is going to be a major headache.

Headache to work on. Headache after 60k miles sure. Powertrain warranty will cover anything that goes wrong up to 60k miles. I wouldn't worry about it and I would enjoy the much better torque/power delivery.

2nd gens are overpriced and hard to find with low mileage. I was in the market after I sold my 5th gen 4runner, but ended up putting the money towards a new 2023 instead.
