I have a 2004 Tacoma 4 door 4x4. So I have a dome light that works when I open the door and I have a light attached to the rear view mirror that works when you turn the button on but not when you open the door. Any suggestions on why the rear view mirror lights won’t work? I have dimmer switch that seems to dim the gauge cluster and radio/ac.

That all sounds like it's functioning how toyota designed it to.

Ok thank you I wasn’t sure, for some reason I thought my last Tacoma the lights by the rear view mirror would turn on when I opened the door

Not sure if it is the same on a 2004, but on my 98 there is a rocker switch for the rear view mirror lights to turn them on when the doors open or only when the switches for the lights are pressed.

Double cabs didn't get this option. You can install one with some slight modifications. Here's a thread on it.
