Goofing around with scrap to do a test fitting (with repro hardware) for a big project using expensive vintage originals.

Played with some carving, all freehand with razorblades/secondhand knives and a lot.of sandpaper.

And here's a finished piece for my daughter to keep art supplies in -

I got some real fresh smells today. Did some milling for the first time.

Very cool that you got to do that. And now you will learn about sealing wood for drying, stickering and stacking wood for drying, and all the things involved with harvesting and processing your own lumber. Very cool for you indeed.

Found some items to work on. Would it be ok to run the cutting board through a planer to smooth the top? It’s been glued back together, just not sure what kind of glue they used.

I’d say that it’s likely just fine to run through the planer

It’s got some gouges in it, maybe 3/32” deep. I’d like to smooth the entire top. When I first turned it over, I saw it was made in USA. Then I looked harder and it was actually made in Johnson City, 15 miles from here.

Id run it through the planer, then use palm sander with 320grit. Wipe it down with a wet paper towel, let dry then sand again 400grit.

On this boring winter Sunday evening, I finally decided to work on setting up a set of Naren Richter chisels I picked up a while back.
At first glance, the back sides looked flat and polished, but then I ran them over my 1000 grit stone to double check. The three narrow ones were perfect, but things were different when I got to the 3 wider ones!

After an hour or so on my extra-coarse diamond stone, they are about ready to take to the next step.
It’s a real pain, but only needs to be done once. I’m looking forward to seeing how well these perform when they are all set up.

Got the Holly sealed and stickered. I’m hearing different methods of drying. Slower the better and as fast as possible. I finally settled on slow, according to the Wood Bible at woodcraft in Roanoke.
