I need a good shop for engine work in the Fort Collins/ Loveland area.
Oil light came on suddenly on I-70 after a weekend of overlanding in the San Juans.

    Pulled off right away.

    Dipstick was dry.

    Dropped 4 quarts in.

    Starts, but is knocking severely.

    Having it towed home.

    HELP. So bummed.

Sorry to hear and sorry can't help you with the shop question but just curious what you may think caused the oil issue. Hope it works out for you but honestly doesn't sound good.

    Not sure.
There is oil on the front skid plate. Looks like potentially on the driveshaft too.
    Hard to really tell.
It’s dark out and we we’re on the side of the interstate.
In the tow truck now. Ha ha.
    Front seal?
    Back seal?
    Both?
Doesn’t matter much now I suppose.

Might be better to rent a uhaul truck with trailer and tow it back home. This probably isn't going to be a quick patch up or weekend repair. Might be a good idea to shop around for mileage engine and do a swap. A dry engine going at highway speeds will have extensive work needed

Sorry to hear about your taco Shane. If you have trouble finding a shop in Foco you might try Tru Automotive in Denver. They specialize in Toyotas and seem to do quality work at a decent price. Or you might try asking around in the regional, Colorado thread here on Tacomaworld.

L1 automotive but I believe Greg may be booked through October. I'd call them sooner than later it may take a couple weeks to source a new one.

New short blocks are easy to get from Toyota and run about $3k.

Pedersen Toyota actually didn't do me bad.
Engle Automotive in Loveland has also been reasonable for my family and me.

Pedersen Toyota screwed me over really badly on a valve job some years ago. If their service manager is on this board, he's well aware of my disdain for that shop.

Advantage Automotive here in Loveland set me right, after that - they've been my go-to ever since.

What was the cause of the failure?

Can't say enough about Joe over at Rocky Mountain Automotive. Great guy and always did right by me. Did a real solid once when my sister and her family were visiting and had trouble with her big conversion van. Great guy and shop.

Curious, have you seen them fail before?

    No !

I have one and they work good. But I can see how a rock or log could snap one off. Mine is 8 yrs old and no problem.

Yeah, I wouldn’t run one without a good skid plate.
