Coming from some one with an Open Diff and no traction control.
I can say throughly say, “Open Diff sucks”. Most all 2005-2008 had no type of TC.

Unless OP is on a budget, get the LSD.
And remember to use standard gear oil WITH LSD additives.
Don’t go with synthetic diff oil……

Again, thank you for all of the responses and info here!...we passed the updated info onto our mechanic this morning, and he was very pleased to have such specific info for the Tacoma rear-end. We're getting a used rear-end lined up as we speak, and can't say thank you enough for the quick responses / help!

Quick follow up on this mission - with us grabbing up a non-locker rear end assembly, would we ultimately be able to switch over all of our internals from our current LSD rear-end, and thereby keep the LSD function?......really, just using the housing of the non-locker assembly, and transferring our current system over to it? (current system has 91k miles, LSD, new brake shoes / drums, lines, etc). If we can switch out our internals, would you recommend doing wheel bearings while all of this is opened up (suggested earlier in this thread). Wanting to make sure my communication with our mechanic is correct and the best route. Thanks again!!!!

It wouldn’t be a bad idea. The rear bearing go a long time useless the axle seal leaks. If the axle seal leaks, gear oil can wash the grease out of the wheel bearing. It’s not uncommon to see 150k+ or even 200k on the rear bearings.

You do need to ask your mechanic if he has the tools to do the bearings. It a lot easier if you have a jig that’s made to the Toyota axles. And of course a press.
