I was installing an intake on my 4.0 last weekend and noticed that my battery had corrosion around the side of the battery tiedown bracket. I could understand it having some on or near the battery posts, but thought it was a little odd that it was on the bracket itself. There was a bit towards the back of the battery, on the underside of the tiedown bracket and some on the rod going down the back. Anyone have any idea where it could of came from? Never seen that happen before but my only guess is maybe my battery has a crack in it I'm not seeing? I don't know when or if it's ever been replaced, truck has 110k on it currently. I'm going to assume it has been at least once.

Leaking battery caused it, it could have leaked enough it's not wet anymore.

Not much to worry about unless it's an excessive amount of corrosion. I think mine has a bit of corrosion, but nothing crazy.

I'd assume it's from the acidic gasses emitted from the battery over time.

You could remove, clean it to bare metal and repaint if you'd like.

Ok, next question is what would have caused it to leak? Overcharging?

Anything is possible really, could be over charged, could just be a bad seal on the battery.

If it's a flooded battery like OEM, then there are vent holes on the battery for acid to overflow out of. Get an AGM battery to mitigate this problem.

A normal wet battery needs to be vented if not the pressure would cause it to explode .

That is why caution is needed to disconnect the negative cable first.

Hydrogen Gas Likes to explode Blowing up a battery is not something you want to do up close.

The acid completely destroyed the clothing I was wearing I lucked out I turned away just as it exploded I am not sure my eyes would have survived .

I appreciate the info fellas, I didn't really pay it too much attention when I had the hood open but I'll have to see if I can find a manufacture date on it. Might be time for replacement soon.

Your better off with a load test.

A in service date is only good if your under warranty or the battery is being prorated.

Clean, prime, repaint using a spray can to match, Fluid Film.

I installed a new battery 2 weeks ago no corrosion, but the truck has been Fluid Film since new.

I have a posting about it on the Hey Connecticut forum.

I had the same problem since the truck was new. I didn't feel like sitting at the dealer half a day over a battery.

It was leaking acid slowly. When I bought a new battery, I wire brushed it aggressively.

Washed it & let it dry.

    Johnson Controls batteries, pfft!

I sprayed the hold down with Rust-Oleum.

    No problem since. :)
