So this is something that been bugging me for a while. On the way to work at 6 a.m. I average 13 mpg on the way home at 4 p.m I average 17 mpg, same route, average 65-70 mph both ways, no stop and go either way no wind etc. 2.7 auto. So what gives?

as a long range (subjective) shooter for both center fire and rimfire,,, I can assure that most anywhere you are, there is wind currently present. Weather or not you can see it? That's another story. While these trucks aren't bullets, a few MPH of head or tailwind makes a difference, just like the hit your MPGs take when you turn your cruise control up 3-5mph, say from 70mph to 73mph.

My mpg shows similar, maybe a 2mo difference. It's cold in the morning so I'm typically warming up my truck for 10mins, then I don't get nearly as good mileage with heat on.
Afternoons are near 70 so the heat is off

    I drive a Miata.
Mines the opposite, and I know exactly why.

While the net delta elevation is zero (ish), it's the timing of how I hit the hills. Because of where the stoplights are, on the way to work I decelerate on more uphill sections and accelerate on more downhill sections. On the way back it's opposite.

It's enough to average a 3 mpg difference, after a year of collecting data.

LED interior, license plate, and fog lights. More to come.
I get about 1mpg better going to work than I do coming home. It's a 500ft elevation change downward over the 50 trip to work. I assume that's what it is. I go in really early and the traffic is about the same both ways. Even if I do a double and head home at 10pm the mpg that way is less.

A few, mainly added skids. I like leaving the suspension alone. I drive forest service dirt roafs in the desert west extremely extremely too fast. Toyota nailed this suspension going 65 across desert terrain. Changing it is dumb unless you have a specific need like crawling or mud.
I get 25 mpg going down Cameron Pass. I get around 9.8 mgp going up it. That's 7000 feet of elevation gain or drop over a 40 mile course.

People have to stop looking at that worthless average mpg computer on the dash. Most unreliable thing on these trucks. Unless you can control your right foot exactly the same everytime you drive, Not.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
    Consider this:
In the am your Taco has sat overnight, the entire drivetrain has cooled down to ambient temp. 10 hours later the same truck has mostly cooled down to a warmer ambient temp. My Taco gets crappy MPGs for the first 5-10 miles until the everything is at normal operating temp. It's a bit slower to warm up after sitting all night. Nothing unusual here.
