New Tacoma at Interstate Highway Speeds

G'day all,
Like many, I'm looking for a specific 2023 Tacoma and color at MSRP or below price, and I can find them fairly easily. The draw back is the MSRP or below trucks are not in my local area, which by it self is not a big problem. I'm concerned about a 4-6 hundred mile return drive home. Many seem to do it with little or no negative comments.

So, is there any serious drawbacks in today's hi-tech world for driving a new Tacoma those distances at highway speed or is this just the old school you gotta "break it in for 500-1000 miles first" before driving long distances at speed syndrome kicking in?

You can go as fast as you want, just vary your speed. I've owned a lot of new vehicles, I've always drove them like I stole it after the first 50 miles. The most important part of a break-in are the piston rings. The first 50 miles are crucial in seating rings.

 

Pretty much don't use cruise control and vary the speed, you'll be good.

Modern engines are way better than the old days of break in periods, they just don't want you to thrash it.

Actually the best break in practice is brief, full throttle acceleration at LOW rpm. This brings up combustion pressures and seat rings quickly.

 

Just get off and back on interstate ramps every so offten.

 

just drive her home! this particular V6/transmission combo shifts often, so you darn sure aren't going to hold the same RPM's.
As mentioned, maybe just plan a few more rest/gas stops.
It'll be just fine, don't overthink it, have fun w your new truck and hopefully seeing some new countryside.

 

I took back-roads home the 250 miles from the dealership. That kept me from setting the cruise and falling asleep.

 

And don't tow with it for the 1st few hundred miles

 

The only guidance on the break-in thing from Toyota is not to tow anything for the first 500 miles. No mention of what you can and can't tow in terms of weight, but I really don't think pulling around a light weight utility trailer or something like that is going to hurt anything.

I know a guy that tows his compact excavator with his TRD Sport. Couldn't be as bad as a guy I saw towing a towable cherry picker from Home Depot with a Subaru Impreza using a Class I hitch with an adapter. Not sure how Home Depot even allowed it.

Given how much the 6 speed auto likes to hunt for gears you’ll be fine. But yes there is a specific break in procedure posted above.

 

The replies are greatly appreciated and I thank you for your time. I have see the "Breaking in your new Toyota" precautions and followed them pretty much when I purchased my 2018, but that was a local buy. The 2018 is tuned so the "gear hunting" issue is pretty much gone; therefore, out of mind. Thanks for bring that point forward, that pretty much by it self, will constantly change rpm during the trip home. Again, the advice is very helpful.
