Just found another anomaly. With the thumb drive plugged in the radio doesn't automatically turn on when the truck is started.

My head unit turns on and the music on my thumb drive starts playing.

I have the basic radio in my truck, when I use my phone for navigation and tethered to the usb port, and bluetooth on, under the radio I get no voice prompts. When using the usb port in the center console it works fine. The one under the radio is more of a media input than a charging port. It took me a bit to figure that one out.

I have this command with my dongle connected:

    https://www.amazon.com/Carlinkit-Wireless-CarPlay-Adapter-Factory/dp/B08P1GWQDB

SirusXM is what I listen to: 1st Wave, 80s, BPM, Chill, Ozzy's Boneyard, Hair Nation just to name a few...

    So I don't connect a USB/thumb drive because my dongle is in-use.

I like that the text message is read aloud to you...then Siri asks if you want to reply.

Wait for the tone and speak...then she will read your message back to you and ask if ok to send.

    Very cool system!

I'm not sure how your set up works; in my case, my Android phone is Bluetooth connected to my audio system, no cable/dongle/nuthin', the audio text exchanges is just a native part of the Toyota system.

Same set-up with Bluetooth + the dongle...except mine's an iPhone.

My iPhone's cable connection does not work/connect properly...hence the dongle--which substitutes for the cable.

If the Toyota system works without dongle/cable, I have not tested it out yet.

Must be the voice button on the steering wheel you're referring to...?

No, dongle at all, just straight Bluetooth from phone to the Toyota audio system. I don't use the voice button to hear or dictate texts; that is all done via the touch screen.

I use the voice button on the steering wheel to change radio channels on Sirus XM and listen to my favorite years of rock 60,70,80's era, open maps, get directions, hear text messages but I have not tried to reply to them with voice command yet still learning a lot about this system. The only time that I will use the USB port is for charging my phone when it is low. Love the truck.just saying

Since my last posts on this, I've tried various thumb drives and all have the same result. No voice command with the drive inserted. I did find that the audio would come on fine as long as the thumb drive wasn't the audio source when the truck was shut off.

I've also found there are numerous quirks with the operation of the navigation and audio in general. Nothing I can't live with, but things that just shouldn't be. One thing I can't figure is why you can't do XM favorites for the audio or notifications when a particular artist or song is playing. Hell, the Infotainment system on my 2016 Street Glide will do this, as will my wife's 2015 Murano. A 2023 system surely should be able to do this.

Try disabling Android Auto and Apple CarPlay on your headunit and see if having a USB device added allows voice commands to work.
